It requires being fully conscious of your surroundings and focusing on what you're doing, not on the end result. focusing is a lot like paying attention, except that your field of vision is much narrower, on one person or one task.
To be mindful, let's say, of another person or a conversation, resist the temptation to say what's on your mind. Instead, pay attention to what the other person is saying, and rephrase his or her words to ensure that you understand them. Instead of interrupting or interjecting, wait for a natural pause and segue in the conversation. |

His book focusing describes this process. I found this focusing technique to be an effective way to begin communication with plants. (See color plate 6.)
We had the great fortune to have Nina Spiro, a musician and music therapist, in our class one year. She brought to us her healing work through sound called Pravada Sound Healing? She instructed us to sit with a plant and begin to let a sound or tone rise up from within us as a response to the plant. I began toning back and forth with a plant, allowing the tone to shift as need be to come into resonance with the plant. |

Think of an unruly crowd of fans at a football game suddenly focusing their attention and rising together in groups to do the wave cheer. That's coherence at work. The individuals are still individuals, but for a certain amount of time they come together, acting as one, in a purposeful behavior that has meaning. No one believed quantum particles in the body could cooperate like that. After further research, Popp came to believe that the source of the coherent light in the body is DNA. |
| Other researchers are focusing on phase, especially former astronaut Edgar Mitchell and his collaborators, who are exploring the quantum holographic nature of consciousness and, indeed, of the universe. Mitchell refers heavily to the work of Dr. Peter Marcer, who proposes a theory of phase-conjugate-adaptive-resonance.19 To briefly explain, he hypothesizes that all matter emits phase waves, as do all conscious beings. |

Most convincing research indicates that focusing on the low glycemic index (how much 1 oz of food makes the blood sugar rise) promotes fat loss. Generally, calorie intake is reduced, the diet is modified to include foods that are low glycemic and non-processed, and a Paleolithic diet (a caveman diet), in which processed foods are eliminated in favor of simple vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and plain meats, is adopted. White foods should be avoided, as should fad diets, such as liquid diets or diet pills, as they do not tend to promote sustainable weight loss. |

This means not focusing too much or too long on a single food group, such as carbohydrates. It is best to have a well-balanced and varied approach to food. þExercise: Low-impact aerobic exercise and resistance training three times a week is a good program for type C. Tai chi would be a good choice. þEnzymes: Type Cs should take a high potency digestive blend with meals and snacks and a high protease supplement between meals for maintenance, adding a high amylase formula and high lipase formula when the diet is shifted toward high carbohydrate or high fat meals. |

Although a highly complex form of exercise, it is not merely a work-out, but a complete, natural and effective therapy focusing on mental, emotional and physical harmony.
T'ai-chi, meaning 'wholeness', is an abbreviation of the Chinese t'ai-chi ch'uan, meaning 'supreme, ultimate'. It was first practised by Taoist monks in the fourteenth century, with the aim of mastering the self, mind and body harmony in motion. |

Instead of focusing on numbers on the scale, turn your attention to the joy of living healthy because it's just plain good for you in both the short and long term.
Don't sweat a few extra pounds, either. Being a little overweight (according to those darn ''weight for height" tables), if it's where your body seems comfortable while you are living this healthy life, might be fine for you. A more valuable guideline is to monitor your waist circumference because this measures the "extra" in the most dangerous place. |
| We have to start focusing on eating and exercising for the health of it and letting the pounds fall where they may. Our obsession with being thin is partly what got us into this mess, after all.
We have to stop the fad diets immediately and make changes in our eating and exercise habits that will serve us well for the rest of our lives. It's not a sexy message, I know, but it's the truth.
Go for whole grains. More whole grains may lead to less VAT fat (visceral adipose tissue). This is the type of abdominal fat that's most dangerous to health, even in teens. |

The following histories are taken: medical history, focusing on any existing illnesses; obstetric history, identifying risk factors in any previous pregnancies; and family and genetic history. Toxin exposure is also evaluated. A physical examination may be performed, including height and weight checks and a Pap smear and pelvic examination if it is due. Screening for sexually transmitted diseases is also carried out. Other infectious diseases are evaluated through blood testing, including Hepatitis B, rubella, and HIV. |

Some overweight people do well on a high-protein, low-fjj 4?A carbohydrate diet and others do well on a low-fat, low-protein, high-^S^Mmr complex carbohydrate diet. For more advice consult a dietician. Regardless of the type of diet that is best for you, make sure you eat enough protein every day. It's a path that points toward more plant foods and away from processed foods; a path that seeks balance within broad dietary patterns instead of focusing on one or two particular miracle foods or ingredients. It's a path that leads us beyond "low-fat" or !"low-carb." It's about making smart choices most of the time. It's about slowing down to enjoy each meal as a celebration; it's about savoring each bite. When we nourish our bodies with the best foods that nature has to offer, our bodies spontaneously respond in kind. |

We should, instead be focusing our attention, not on the annoyance of the symptom, but on what the symptom is trying to tell us. What have we been doing wrong that is causing the body to complain? The symptom is not the problem; it is our friend. If we pay attention to this communication and cooperate with it, our bodies will work to correct the deeper conditions and save us from greater suffering and poor health in the future.
Our thinking should be:
What does my body need to be able to correct the cause of this distress? What is it lacking?
How can I avoid contributing to the distress? |

THE POSSIBILITY OF A FLU PANDEMIC
Experts are concerned about a global flu epidemic (pandemic) that could kill millions around the world—and it is quite possible. Consider the three influenza pandemics of the 20th century...
The Spanish flu of 1918 affected 20% to 40% of the world's population and killed more than 50 million people—675,000 people died in the US alone. |

"Nobody has been focusing on the babies at more than 34 weeks—are we doing the right thing by not bringing them to full term?" asks Dr. Amanda Cotter, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine.
Although the impact on one infant may not be huge, the public health ramifications are considerable. "The total hospital cost for these [late preterm] infants is about the same as it is for the extremely preterm babies because there are fewer of the extremely preterm infants," Green says.
WHY THE CHANGE? |
| Many hospital patients and their families don't realize that at every hospital, in addition to all the advanced drugs and technical procedures, there's also a group of people—doctors and others—who spend a great deal of time focusing on the personal, human and moral issues of medicine—an ethics committee. Members of this committee help work through the many troubling medical issues that can arise. |
| Although older people were able to focus on what was important, they were also still focusing on the irrelevant, and that was causing them to remember less well," says Gazzaley.
A CLUE
The good news from Gazzaley's study is that these changes were not universal. Some older folks didn't have trouble suppressing irrelevant information.
"There was a subpopulation that was able to remember and didn't have suppression deficiency. These people were able to perform like younger subjects," Gazzaley says.
That means "that somewhere in here is a clue to successful aging," he adds.

•Take naps. Surveys show that most Americans don't get as much sleep as they need (most of us require seven to eight hours a night). Daily naps of 15 to 20 minutes are energizing—and longer naps can help you catch up if you are sleep-deprived. I sleep only five to six hours a night, so I often take a two-hour nap on Saturdays.

| It's remote, but it's real—the hardest kind of risk to put in perspective. Yet focusing on a worst-case scenario can have grave consequences. Worst-case news reports, including comparisons to the terrifying flu pandemic of 1918, have scared my patients out of all proportion. The odds remain overwhelmingly on their side—in 1918 there were no vaccines for flu, no antiviral drugs, no antibiotics or steroids to treat flu patients who had pneumonia or asthma and no worldwide public-health network. |

This statement upset the makers of Viagra so much that Pfizer spokeswoman Janice Lipsky told Times reporter Gardiner Harris that Levitra had benefited from "false claims and public relations in which they inaccurately state that Levitra works faster and is better, neither of which is true. |

I remember when I first started to eat healthier I rarely thought of things I didn't want to eat anymore. Instead I was always exploring new healthier possibilities. This made making changes a fun and easy adventure. I started by adding more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to my diet. I'll never forget eating fruit, some of which I had never had before, and thinking what a delight it was and how I had been missing out on these delicacies of nature for all these years. |

This section is focusing on how to prevent allergies causing asthma by lifestyle approaches.
Often it isn't just the allergy itself that is the problem, though. Most asthmatics have a poor medical history and their usually depleted immune system lowers their resistance to diseases in general, and makes them more susceptible to invasions from allergens. Add to this scenario poor diet, hormonal imbalance and stress, and you may find trying to conquer ill health becomes a constant battle. All the stress of fighting asthma can increase the frequency and severity of allergic reactions. |
| Another study was conducted by Dr Schachter at Yale University, in the United States, focusing on the ability of Vitamin C to relieve exercise-induced asthma. Those in the study took 500 mg of Vitamin C before exercise and it was found that following the exercise the severity of their bronchospasms was lessened significantly. Dr Schachter made it clear in his results that Vitamin C was by no means the most effective agent that could be used for reducing bronchospasm, but it is a beneficial natural remedy with limited and minor side-effects. |

Most of the research being done in bioenergetics was focusing on electromagnetism and the biophotons emitted by cells in living things, but by now Peter did not think they played significant roles in information exchange in the body-field.
Peter said, "I had been puzzling about this ever since the Reid days: how do the real and virtual link? How do they talk to each other? That question occupied me for more than five years. Obviously you can't have two worlds. There is one world, perhaps with two linked aspects to it. The awful duality! We don't want it! We want to live in one world! |
