Barring some major historical political event, I plan to avoid the temptation to comment on these topics and, instead, focus on bringing more positive, productive natural health information to as many people as possible.
In case you're wondering, no, I haven't been visited by men in black and threatened with a "tropical vacation" to Guantanamo Bay if I didn't censor my own work. |

So I started writing articles, and then books, and have been doing consulting in this area ever since, focusing on how the company and the customer communicate online, whether it's the website or it's email or it's a frequently asked questions document. My focus now is measuring the impact -- how do you measure the success of your web efforts and your email efforts?
Mike: And the main focus of your site Targeting.com, is the web metrics right?
Sterne: Targeting.com is all the different kinds of consulting that I do, but focused very specifically on measurement right now, yeah. |

Depth of view is extremely limited at these ranges, so camera focus becomes critical (and there are no auto-focus professional-grade macro lenses, you have to do it manually). A lot of photos ended up being deleted because the focus was off, or the lens filter was dirty, or the exposure was wrong, etc. But if you stick with it -- and you have the right equipment -- you can snag some incredible shots of really tiny things.
When you're zoomed in that close on something, it's also easy to get lost in the topography of the object. |

Vitamin D, Inflammation, and the Metabolic Syndrome
Our understanding of cardiovascular disease has recently shifted from a simple focus on lipids to a focus on inflammation. The weight of evidence now suggests that chronic low-grade inflammation and its effect on blood vessels are actually what cause arteriosclerosis (coronary heart disease). Furthermore, diet and fat cells are the sources of this inflammation, and clear links between inflammation and low vitamin D levels have been shown. |

It's a public education campaign that CHEC is launching in May, and the Blue Butterfly Campaign will focus on five tips that are the most important things you could do in your home. They'll have a number of celebrity spokespeople talking about this, and it's a privilege for us to be able to participate in this program with them because it is completely focused on education.

Try to set aside five minutes three times a day to close your door, turn off the phone, and just focus on inhalation and exhalation. Some people accomplish this best when they are naturally sequestered; for instance, in a car or on the toilet. Try the following technique:
• Put your hand under your belly button and focus on moving your breath down through your belly rather than up through your chest.
• Breathe in through your nose for a count of four.
• Hold for a count of three.
• Exhale through your mouth for a count of four. |

That was my focus. There are, I don't know, about 30 million people in the New York area. The focus was to think globally, act locally, so my focus was to start here. But in New York, you go anywhere -- we give out these red bags to people at each weekend -- and whenever I'm out on the street, I see people carrying these red bags. It's kind of a phenomenon here.

Oddly, we are paying industrial farmers to practice unsustainable agriculture that undercuts the ability of the poor to feed themselves—the only possible solution to global hunger Political systems perpetually focused on the crisis du jour rarely address chronic problems like soil erosion; yet, if our society is to survive for the long haul, our political institutions need to focus on land stewardship as a mainstream—and critical—issue. |

Many safety assessments focus solely on the health implications of the GM protein created by the transgene and ignore the potential for widespread damage in the DNA, presented in the previous section. Even if we limit our focus to the narrow evaluation of these single proteins, however, there are significant health risks.

I admit that making these changes can be daunting, but if you focus on the health aspects, you'll be in a better place psychologically to maintain better eating habits and remain physically active. One of my nutritional mot-tos is "Eat and exercise for the health of it. . . and let the pounds fall where they may." Instead of focusing on numbers on the scale, turn your attention to the joy of living healthy because it's just plain good for you in both the short and long term.
Don't sweat a few extra pounds, either. |

For the past four years, my efforts have focused primarily on education, grassroots activism and content creation. Today, I'm expanding the scope of these efforts with the launch of two new for-profit entities that aim to deliver practical yet innovative products that help people live healthier, more sustainable lives in harmony with our planet.

Gaining better mental focus and having more energy will likely be among the first improvements you'll notice. In fact, you may feel better than you have in years. Recovering your health is a powerful motivator for staying healthy.
To keep on track, be mindful of what you eat and develop a personal discipline or a routine that governs what you choose to eat and not to eat. Being mindful means to be "in the moment" and also to be aware of potential consequences of your actions. |

While it is true, 64% of cancer patients today have a 5-year survival, that doesn't mean survival can be attributed to treatment. For example, a recent review of chemotherapy employed for 22 different types of cancer found that chemotherapy is attributed to only 2.3% of the cancer patients who survived five years or more. |

There are many herbs that have mild estrogen-like activity, including rosemary, licorice, red clover, flaxseed, soy, coffee, kudzu, black cohosh, onions and grapes. |

Its focus," said Fran, "on the whole population, rather than the individual, is fundamentally different." After a moment she added: "In public health, an effect of five deaths per thousand is, and should be, quite significant. But the practicing physician sees one patient at a time. So it's yes or no, rather than a probability equation."
We decided that public health was outside of standard MD medicine and therefore would remain even as medicine disappeared.
The problem of what stays and what disappears is perhaps not as difficult as we first thought. Our criterion of success is mortality. |

WHY WE DIE
Given our focus on mortality, it is appropriate to begin with an examination of why we die. We all know the litany. The leading cause of death in 2000 was heart disease (30%),10 followed by cancer (23%) and strokes (7%).11 The public assumes without question that medical intervention is effective in diagnosing and treating these diseases—and that as a result we live longer. In the chapters that follow, we'll cast considerable doubt on these assumptions and suggest the way that we look at illness and health is wrongheaded. Which leads us to... |

Thus, does the sign become the focus of attention, the disease, if there is one, being invisible.
Third, there is a clear dichotomy between the mind and the body. Diseases are located in the body and caused by germ or virus or toxin or gene. Treatment involves intervening in or with body functions, or in aiding the body (as with antibiotics) to fend off disease. Even so-called mental illnesses are claimed to have an anatomical, physiological, or genetic basis; this last explanation is in current vogue because of advances in DNA analysis. |

For these reasons, scientists have placed a greater focus on alpha-tocopherol.
But Friedrich writes that cancer researchers have begun to pay closer attention to gamma-tocopherol, in particular, mainly because studies with alpha tocopherol have been inconsistent. This may be due to the problems of dietary intake reporting by patients, but studies where supplements have been used in humans have also been inconsistent.
Friedrich asks the question: could alpha-tocopherol be more effective when paired with the gamma compound? Some studies with other forms of cancer appear to confirm this theory. |
