| This result has been explained by reduced brain signal activity when using human insulins. This was further researched by Ross to include reduced signal activity during non-REM sleep (Sleep, 1998).22/23 This is directly related to less warnings of excess insulin.
In a 1991 Diabetic Medicine article, Tattersall and Gill presented evidence that diabetics switched to human insulin from animal insulin were much more likely to suffer unexplained death, including dead-in-bed syndrome. |

The aquatic ape theory explained why, like many other aquatic mammals, we lost our fur—to become more streamlined in the water. It explained the development of our prominent nose and zuu SURVIVAL, ur inc iiv-rscoi downward-facing nostrils, which allowed us to dive. The only other primate with a prominent nose (that we know of) is the aptly named proboscis monkey—which just so happens to be semi-aquatic itself and can also be seen wading in the water on two legs or going for a swim.
Finally, the aquatic theory may explain why our fat is attached to our skin. |

As Dr. West explained, he found and documented a near-100% correlation between traffic accidents and skid marks. "Wherever we find these cars colliding," he explained, "we also find these skid marks."
The town had "Skid Marks Disease," the doctor explained, and the answer to the town's epidemic of traffic accidents would, "...require nothing more than treating Skid Marks Disease by making the streets skid-proof," Dr. West exclaimed, to great applause from the townspeople.

She was a good worker, just as she was a good driver.
I explained to Celeste that a lot of what people say or do reflects more about their own personalities than it does about other people's behavior. Having driven with her, I knew she was a safe driver. I explained that impatient drivers might feel as if she was slowing them down, but their impatience wasn't her problem. It was theirs. Similarly, she could ignore the office blabbermouth because everyone felt that the person's gossip was annoying and simply to be tolerated. |

How come everything is going wrong?"
I explained to Thomas that the lack of quality fats and greens in his diet, along with his daily jogging, were signaling his genes that he was an unsuccessful animal, working too hard for inferior food. His killer genes were activated. When I explained how my program would reverse the damage and restore his body to good health, Thomas was incredulous. What I was proposing was the opposite of everything modern medicine had taught him. But, what did he have to lose? He embarked on Diet Evolution. |

Overweight honeybees don't fly very well," explained Adrew Apis, a honeybee researcher working at the University of Missouri, Columbia. "Even if they make it out to the flower and collect some pollen, they sort of crash land back in the hive like a damaged fighter jet on an aircraft carrier, spilling their pollen granules all over the inside of the hive and getting their wings stuck in the honey."
But ConPfuzer has promised to come up with a new drug to treat Honeybesity. "Our goal is to end Honeybesity by making beekeepers pay the highest prices in the world for Buzzalin," explained Dr. |

Researchers in the 1950s and 1960s had studied populations in other countries that had substantially lower rates of heart disease, which could be explained by their lower consumption of saturated fat. That it could just as easily be explained by other factors—fewer total calories? fewer refined carbohydrates? more exercise? more fruits and vegetables or fish?—did not disturb the gathering consensus that fat must be the key. |

As we explained in our discussion of protein in chapter 4, however, protein-rich eating habits do a better job of preserving muscle mass in comparison with simple low-calorie diets.
Protein-rich diets can also help to preserve bone mass and bone density, as long as the diet includes large amounts of vegetables and fruits.
Protein is necessary for the formation of both muscle and bone, and eating vegetables and fruit counteracts any potential negative impact from consuming large amounts of protein. |

The thing that's really startling is that the differences we see are all explained by these decisions around discretionary treatment, things that don't fall into the category of absolutely necessary, important medicine."
This is a central point. Patients in high-spending regions are not getting more big-ticket surgeries; rather, they're being given more of the small stuff of medicine—tests, procedures, and drugs—some of which may be prescribed defensively to avert lawsuits. What all of these treatments and tests have in common is that there are no hard-and-fast rules about when to use them. |

And that, as a result, many of the major physical differences between humans and the other apes are best explained as adaptations to moving (e.g. wading, swimming and/ or diving) better through various aquatic media and from greater feeding on resources that might be procured from such habitats.
When you put it like that, it starts to sound an awful lot like common sense, don't you think? let's imagine that Alister, Elaine, and Algis are right. Some of our ancestors spent a lot of time in and around the water, so much so that it influenced our evolution. |

Muscle pain and weakness. As I explained to Mark, any person on statins who experiences significant new muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness should let his or her doctor know, as it may be a sign of muscle damage. Continuing to take the drug in spite of muscle damage can lead to rhabdomyolysis, a potentially fatal condition. If you have myopathy, taking CoQ10 is essential whether or not you continue on the drug. Myopathy is an obvious sign of CoQ10 depletion.
The good news is that CoQ10 is easy to supplement. |

Before discharging him, she explained to Powers and his wife why she was not giving him a CT scan. She told the couple that the neurological exam was completely normal, and she was confident he wasn't bleeding in his brain, but that didn't mean he would not develop a bleed over the next few weeks. She gave them strict instructions to go to his primary care physician or come back to the emergency room if he began having any symptoms, like dizziness, disorientation, or a persistent headache.
Lenzer ran into the couple about a year later, when they came to the emergency room for another reason. |

Now, about your diet," I explained. "The idea that eating high-cholesterol foods leads to elevated blood levels of cholesterol and causes heart disease may be common medical wisdom. But eating foods that contain cholesterol not only doesn't raise your cholesterol levels—it doesn't cause heart disease, either."
At this point Mark didn't know what to believe. "Are you saying that I can eat eggs and butter, with no risk to my heart?" He looked amazed. And I could already see him casting an eager eye on the bread and butter at the center of the table. I realized that I'd better be more precise. |
| Predictably, he had no idea what coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) was. I explained that it's a nutrient required by every cell of the body to transform carbohydrate and fat into energy, in the many "energy-producing factories" called mitochondria; and that the same mechanism Lipitor employs to lower cholesterol also lowers production of CoQ10.

He was actually grateful for the information, and wondered why his doctor hadn't recommended that he take CoQ10 along with the drug. |
| This is how I explained it to Gloria: "Here's what's happening inside your body while you sit in your chair, munching happily on your low-fat cookies, watching your favorite TV show. Those cookies are all starch and sugar, and they break down very rapidly in your stomach to glucose, the simplest form of sugar. That glucose is sucked into your bloodstream through the walls of your small intestines, causing an abrupt rise in your levels of blood sugar. You get a delicious sugar rush, and life is good!"
She nodded in agreement, with a guilty smile. |
| I explained to her that these drugs could cause those same common NSAID side effects of intestinal ulcers and bleeding—it just didn't happen quite as often.
Only a few months later, the Vioxx cookie crumbled. The drug was found to cause heart attacks in about one in three hundred patients taking it. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) estimated that between 88,000 and 139,000 heart attacks had been caused, at least in part, by Vioxx—and that 30 to 40 percent had probably been fatal. The drug was voluntarily withdrawn by its manufacturer.

As we've explained, it's important to combine lean protein with a lot of vegetables for maximum health benefits.
The bottom line is that protein is good for you. When you increase the amount of high-quality protein you eat, you do a better job of regulating your blood sugar and weight.
Glucagon, the Hormone behind Protein's Benefits
One fundamental reason why protein is beneficial relates to its glucagon-boosting effect. This hormone counteracts insulin, and most of what it does is in direct opposition to insulin. |
| Dr. Ron explained that each can contained about ten teaspoons of sugar, adding up to about 80 pounds of sugar a year. But Dr. Ron's message never really seemed to register with Melinda. After all, she once said, "It was only a few cans of pop."
At a recent annual appointment, Dr. Ron noted that Melinda had gained fifteen pounds and her blood pressure was high for the first time. Both changes are signs of prediabetes. With a family history of diabetes and stroke, Melinda sighed. She knew it was finally time for a change. |
| As we explained in chapter 3, trans fats increase weight gain and promote diabetes, whereas high-fructose corn syrup boosts insulin levels and insulin resistance. |

As I explained in chapter 1, monsoons depend on heat differentials between land and the surrounding ocean. These land-ocean contrasts will intensify in a warmer world, meaning that a total collapse of the Indian summer monsoon is unlikely over the next century. Indeed, times in the past when the monsoon has been weaker tend to be associated with colder periods, such as the height of the last ice age. |

The waiter apologized and explained that the chef had poured the sauce over it and was cooking another chicken breast. Jack's meal finally arrived—an overcooked, dried-out piece of chicken. The lesson? Unhealthy ingredients and meals are the rule in most of these restaurants, and the staff has little interest in accommodating out-of-the-ordinary requests.
On the other end of the spectrum are more creative—and often more expensive—restaurants. These are sometimes referred to as fusion (that is, a fusion of different cuisines) or nouveau (new) American cuisine restaurants. |

The spasmolytic, gastric juice-stimulating and cholagogic effect of the herb could be explained by the aromatic-amaroid structure.
COMPOUNDS: ANGELICA ROOT
Volatile oil: chief components are alpha- and beta-phellan-drenes, alpha-pinenes, macrocyclic lactones, including penta-and heptadecanolide
Furanocoumarins: including bergaptene, xanthotoxin, scopo-letin, umbelliferone
Caffeic acid derivatives: including chlorogenic acid Flavonoids
EFFECTS: ANGELICA ROOT

The stellar results from that study could be explained by selection bias: the possibility that the women who got transplants started out healthier, and had less-advanced disease, than the women who had received standard therapy from other doctors. Peters's subjects might have done just as well on conventional therapy as they did with a transplant. The only way to show for certain that high-dose chemotherapy was more effective than conventional treatment was to perform a randomized, controlled trial, the gold standard of medicine. |

Its effect in stimulating the circulation, heart, and diuresis can be explained by the caffeine content.
Homeopathic Uses: Headache precautions and adverse reactions
General: No health hazards or side effects are known in conjunction with the proper administration of designated therapeutic dosages. Quantities corresponding to up,to 400 mg caffeine per day (7 to 11 g of the herb), spread out over the day, are toxicologically harmless to a healthy adult habituated to caffeine through regular consumption of coffee or black tea. |

With support from Press, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and universities and research institutions in Europe and the United States, my colleagues and I had published a series of papers showing that cancer had actually increased and it couldn't all be explained by smoking, improved diagnoses or aging. Judged by this standard, the then two-decade-long war on cancer wasn't going well.3 Our work, released at conferences of Danish, Dutch, Swedish, German, British and American cancer researchers, made headlines. It felt like we had some serious scientific mojo. |

During the early Holocene epoch, 9,000 to 6,000 years ago, the northern hemisphere summer sun was stronger than today, as explained earlier in the section on North America's impending drought. The increased heating warmed up the giant North African landmass to such an extent that it powered a monsoon - just like the one that brings annual summer rains to the Indian landmass today.
Monsoons are based on the simple principle that land surfaces heat up quicker in the summer than the surrounding oceans. |

Her lifetime behavior is explained. I think it may be another one of those biologic laws: if we have to think about an insight, it is not a true insight. If we don't, it is. The insight has to hit us from below, an "Aha!" experience. I think that the essential difference between our approach and cognitive is that they want to get the patient's "head on straight," and we want to give them back their lives. That means feelings, which is the essence of life. |
| Those words explained the feeling on all three levels of consciousness.
The Problem With Left-Brain-Centered Psychotherapy
Unfortunately, we tend to glorify left-brain activities to the neglect of the right. We expect the left brain to fight our battles, particularly, the internal enemies. We do this without taking into account that left-brain development came into being much later in evolutionary history than the right brain, and in each of our individual lives, in part as a means of disengaging us from the other side. One kind of brain tissue cannot do the work of another. |
