The net effect is a slower heart rate and a more normal heart rhythm.
Possible Side Effects
The drug's side effects include dizziness, mental disturbances, nausea, diarrhea, slow heartbeat, headache, and weakness. |
| This is something like the effect of beta-blockers on the heart.
Labetalol is one of the "Whoa, Nelly!" beta-blockers that's used to treat mild to severe hypertension. In extreme cases, it may be given intravenously.
Possible Side Effects
The drug's more common side effects include dizziness and nausea. |

But its effect on cardiovascular disease overall is anything but modest. Study after study has shown that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish reduce the risk of death, heart attack, stroke, and abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). It's been estimated that proper omega-3 fatty acid intake could reduce the rate of fatal arrhythmias by 30 percent. More than 70,000 lives could be saved each year if Americans had sufficient omega-3s in their bodies, estimates Stoll. |

Forty percent said they have experienced a negative reaction (side effect) from taking prescription medications. (See related cartoon on side effects.)
Most side effects go unreported, and there is currently no enforced legal requirement that doctors or drug companies report known side effects to the FDA. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, prescription drugs currently kill approximately 100,000 Americans each year. None of those deaths are accurately recorded as "death by pharmaceuticals. |

At first, researchers thought that these drugs would be used as antihistamines that had a sedative effect. Then it appeared that the tricyclics were good for combating psychoses. Finally, it was accidentally discovered that they were effective as antidepressants.
The tricyclics, so-named for their three-ringed chemical structure, go to work right on the nerve endings, where chemical messengers called neurotransmitters shutde messages from one nerve cell to another. Some of these neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, help to lift the mood. |

Stoner and his co-workers prepared a powdered, freeze-dried extract from black raspberries then gauged its effect on rats that had been exposed to a cancer-causing substance. The research team measured the prevalence of malignant tumors. Compared to a control group, the rats fed black raspberry extract showed a 60 percent reduction in tumors of the esophagus and up to an 80 percent reduction in colon tumors.
"That's a much higher reduction than I thought we'd see," Stoner said, "This suggests that berries bind up a good portion of free radicals, preventing them from causing damage in the body. |

It's often possible to cut down the dosage once you start noticing a positive effect.
SAMe works best with adequate B vitamins, especially folate, B6, and B12, which also support the methylation process in the brain and elsewhere.
Natural Prescription for SAMe
Doses and Precautions
SAMe has been used in doses ranging from 200-1,600 mg a day.
A common dose for depression is 800 mg a day, though people take up to 1,600 mg.
For liver problems, up to 1,600 mg a day.
For bone and joint health, the typical dose is between 200 and 1,200 mg a day.
SAMe is usually taken in divided doses. |

You have the serotonin-boosting effect of cocoa which helps elevate your mood when you're on a diet. You have the appetite suppressing potential of hoodia gordonii (although I think this ingredient is present in too small of a ratio to be much help). And then finally you have the very beneficial effects of chromium and vanadium, trace minerals that are typically deficient in people who suffer from blood sugar imbalances or diabetes. |

Interestingly, some health practitioners capitalize on this little "side effect" and have found magnesium citrate to be the supplement of choice for people suffering from constipation and an excellent alternative to over-the-counter milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide).
Paleolithic diet by Boyd Eaton shows that our hunter-gatherer ancestors got about ten times more potassium than sodium in their diet, but that the ratio has been completely reversed in our modern lives, setting us up for all sorts of heart problems. |

It actually potentiates antioxidants, probably due to its effect on enhancing blood quality and allowing the blood to more effectively transport oxygen and nutrients to the body's cells. In fact, it is my belief that aloe vera makes everything nutritious work better due to its blood-enhancing effects. If I'm right about that, it means aloe can potentiate anti-cancer herbs, too, helping them more effectively target tumors.
Aloe vera actually contains advanced biochemical technology that the drug companies can only help to understand someday. |

Researchers have noted that bacterial overgrowth is associated with IBS (as well as a number of other disorders such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome), and one case study published in Alternative Medicine Review suggests that the antimicrobial activity of peppermint oil might be partly responsible for its positive effect in IBS. More research is needed, but this certainly passes the common-sense test.
Joe Brasco, M.D., a nutritionally minded gastroenterologist whose work I've admired for years, considers IBS "wholly a disease of diet and lifestyle." That's actually good news. |
| If you don't notice any effect, you needed that HCI. Up the dosage on the next meal and continue to do so with each meal until you notice a slight burning. At that point cut back, and you're good to go. Jonathan Wright, M.D., recommends betaine hydrochloride with pepsin, which usually comes in capsules labeled "10 grains" or 650 mg. The full adult replacement dose can be as high as six or seven capsules per meal. "Some of us need that full replacement and some of us don't," Wright says. |
| A running theme throughout this book is the effect stress can have on many health conditions. Stress hormones wreak havoc with virtually every metabolic process, influencing everything from weight to brain function. And acupuncture really shines when it comes to reducing stress.
"If energy is stagnated or out of balance in certain meridians or organs it can result in stress and anxiety," Lawrence explains. Patients typically report an almost otherworldly, completely pleasant feeling of relaxation after a session. |

Pharmaceuticals can impact chemical reactions at any stage to achieve a specific effect.
For example, some medications are designed to increase neurotransmitter production, while others reduce it. Some medications prevent or enhance neurotransmitter storage, while others prevent or enhance its transmission. Pharmaceuticals also work by mimicking the properties and metabolism of the various neurotransmitters. Or the metabolism of biochemicals can be transformed to stop the way the body uses up a neurotransmitter. |

Of course, these companies aren't actually trying to harm people, but that's the effect nonetheless.
It's quite similar to the situation with Big Tobacco. Cigarette companies weren't trying to kill people, they were just trying to make a buck. It was the side effect of their product that caused lung cancer, emphysema and cardiovascular disease. Frankly, that was an unintended side effect. Big tobacco would have much preferred to eliminate the toxic side effects of their products as long as they could preserve the addictive quality of nicotine. |

The more important effect is that it makes your brain feel good. It enhances your mood, and when you're trying to lose weight, you know how important this can be. Restricting your carbohydrates can make you feel down. So getting some chocolate into your brain, so to speak, is a good way to elevate your mood and give you the motivation you need to continue with your weight loss efforts. It's another excellent ingredient in the Trim Spa recipe.
The next ingredient is green tea extract, and my opinion on this ingredient is mixed. |

The public board of inquiry concluded that experimental data "’…do not rule out an oncogenic effect of aspartame, and that, to the contrary, they appear to suggest the possibility that aspartame, at least when administered in the 'huge' quantities employed in the studies, may contribute to the development of brain tumors.’" Until these controversial findings on brain cancer in experimental animals have been resolved, use this product sparingly, if at all."

In fact, one aspartame researcher noticed that, when cancer cells were exposed to aspartame, they became more mobile, and you see the same effect with MSG. It also causes a cancer cell to become more mobile, and that enhances metastasis, or spread. These MSG-exposed cancer cells developed all of these pseudopodians and started moving through tissues, which is one of the earlier observations from cancer.
When you increase the glutamate level, cancer just grows like wildfire, and then when you block glutamate, it dramatically slows the growth of the cancer. |

Insulin usually does its job well, but its effect can be blunted or even lost in people who develop insulin resistance.
This problem can progress to type 2 diabetes, in which the insulin simply can't round up the glucose and put it where it belongs, so it remains in circulation and builds up, eventually spilling over into the urine. This excess glucose draws water along with it, causing frequent urination and intense thirst. Because the cells aren't getting their fuel, intense hunger can also be triggered. |

Mike: Given all this evidence, how has the industry managed to suppress this information and keep this chemical legal in the food supply?
Dr. Blaylock: Donald Rumsfeld was the one who pushed a lot of this through, when he was in the chairmanship of the G.D. Searle company, NutraSweet. He got it approved through the regulatory process, but once it was approved, the government didn't want to admit that they had made a mistake. |

The Edge effect gives you all the tools you need to feel better, stay healthy, and identify the early symptoms of brain imbalance. This book is a straightforward guide to the anatomy, chemistry, electricity, and psychology that provide the building blocks of your day-to-day experience. You'll learn how your body functions and discover successful treatments that you can administer yourself. What's more, you can use this information to live better now.
In these pages I propose an alternative to the illness-, surgery-, and drug-based models of health care. |

Big tobacco would have much preferred to eliminate the toxic side effects of their products as long as they could preserve the addictive quality of nicotine. Likewise, the food companies aren't out to actually harm anybody, it's just that they are unintentionally accomplishing precisely that due to the biological cause-and-effect consequences of their product ingredients.

By mastering the Edge effect, you can control the brain's signals to the rest of the body through changes in brain chemistry, intervening at the very place where brain information is transferred, ultimately allowing you to manage illness now and create abundant health later. the electrical edge
The brain is the greatest generator of electricity within the body. We use four measurements to determine the relationship between brain function and the creation and delivery of human electricity to the rest of the body: voltage, speed, rhythm, and synchrony. |
| This is one of the reasons foods take longer to have their effect, and often need to work in conjunction with other modifications—whether they be prescription drugs, hormones, food supplements, or environmental changes.
Learning to make better dietary choices based on your nature can help you maintain better, balanced health, but you won't see changes in a matter of minutes, as you do with medication, or in a matter of days, as is the case with hormones. Altering your nature through diet requires weeks. |
| When the Edge effect occurs, your brain increases the production of essential biochemicals, and new neurons are created in the brain's center of higher intellectual function, the cerebral cortex. These new neurons can only be created in cerebrospinal fluid. biochemistry feeds physiology
All of us possess the same basic anatomy and approximately the same amount of proverbial gray matter. All of us sustain life with the same processes occurring within our remarkable brains. So why are we all so different? |
| No matter what age you are, a decline in memory is a signal that you are experiencing the negative side of the Edge effect. When memory loss occurs, your brain chemicals are unbalanced. Acetylcholine is the biochemical most directly involved with memory loss.
Acetylcholine promotes two important functions: brain speed and brain moisture. Changes in brain speed mark the process of memory loss. When our brain speed slows, we cannot think as quickly, and we lose the ability to recall events, directions, or names stored in our working memory. |

By plugging into the beta-receptors, these messengers, in effect, "ring a bell" that notifies the heart that it's time to work harder.
The drug carteolol also "rings a bell," but only a little. Just like the messengers, carteolol plugs into the beta-receptors. But while the messengers "ring the bell" loudly, carteolol rings it gendy. Instead of bells pealing and the heart scrambling to work harder, with carteolol there are just a few quiet dings. |
