Air Force and rocket maker Lockheed Martin sponsor a Loma Linda University study that pays 100 Californians $1,000 to eat a dose of perchlorate -- a toxic component of rocket fuel that causes cancer, damages the thyroid gland and hinders normal development in children and fetuses -- every day for six months. The dose eaten by the test subjects is 83 times the safe dose of perchlorate set by the State of California, which has perchlorate in some of its drinking water. |

This is important, since in many individuals hypertension cannot be controlled without using a relatively high dose, particularly of a diuretic.
Higher doses are not routinely used because their use is associated with many adverse metabolic effects such as increases in uric acid, triglycerides, and, in some cases, blood sugar. However, if someone with volume-mediated hypertension does not respond to a low dose of a diuretic, prescribing a higher dose is the right thing to do. |

In other words, it's not enough that as a nation we misdiagnose childhood hyperactivity caused by sugar consumption as being a brain chemistry imbalance and then dose all those children with Ritalin, it seems that we also want to start dosing pregnant women as well. Who's next? Are we going to dose all men under the age of 30? Are we going to require the mental health screening of all elderly people, and start dosing everyone over the age of 65 with brain altering drugs too? |

But a word of caution is necessary here: if a person consumes a high dose of zinc for too long, it can actually suppress the immune system. I am not against short-term use of high doses of zinc or even vitamin C with colds; but I believe consistent long-term use of optimal doses of these nutrients in supplementation is better for the antioxidant defense system and the immune system.
When all of the players of our immune system are functioning at their peak capacity, our overall health is obviously the beneficiary. |

Certain drugs can do it, like Niaspan, which is Niacin but in a higher dose.
There is some niacin in here but a very, very low dose of it. One of the problems with niacin is when you take it in high doses, and even in lower doses for some people, you get flush. That makes it difficult to tolerate. We work very hard as doctors to say, "The flushing is not dangerous. Try to take it." There's still, I'd say, at least 30 percent who can't take it or they can't tolerate it. That's where I say, "Why don't you try something natural?" We had almost no flushing with this product. It's fabulous. |

However, if someone with volume-mediated hypertension does not respond to a low dose of a diuretic, prescribing a higher dose is the right thing to do. In contrast, in those whose hypertension is not mediated by volume, a higher dose should be avoided because it confers a higher risk of adverse effects with little benefit to blood pressure control. This is another reason why recognizing when emotional factors are integral to the hypertension can have an important impact on drug treatment. |

Special Situations
The general dosage guidelines discussed above are generally true for adults. However, dosages may need to be adjusted for different people or different categories of people. For example:
• Large people need more than small people.
• Women may need less than men.
• For dosages for the elderly, reduce the dose by one-fourth for those over age 65 and by one-half for those over age 70.

Endoroxin and zinc oxide fume share an unusual dose response that is, in a sense, the reverse or mirror image of anaphylaxis caused by sensitization. Repeat exposure to endotoxin and zinc oxide fume manifests a pattern of blunted effect; this dose response is termed tachyphylaxis.
Welders recognize this phenomenon, because one of their common names for the problem, Monday morning fever, is based on a tachyphylaxis pattern of response. Monday morning fever occurs in circumstances in which the inhalation of zinc oxide is a daily matter (as might occur in shipyard welding). |

Supplementation is recommended, and for those who do not respond to oral supplementation, a daily intravenous dose of 200 to 400 mg of elemental magnesium is recommended.
Is It Safe?
In most cases, magnesium has been found safe at recommended dosage levels. Large doses of this dietary supplement, however, may result in diarrhea, and it may be necessary to lower the amount taken. Moreover, if you have kidney disease, you should talk to your doctor before taking this dietary supplement.
The Recommended Dose
The recommended range of magnesium is 400 to 1,000 mg per day. |

| An article in Toxicology reported that mice administered a single dose of cadmium (by mouth) developed gastroenteritis (irritation and inflammation of the stomach and intestines).108 Just one dose! This is scary considering many humans are exposed to cadmium multiple times a day, especially if they smoke or are subjected to cigarette smoke. Smoking just one cigarette introduces the body to around 20 micrograms! Only half of this is excreted, meaning about 10 micrograms remain in other parts of the body. |

For those with alcoholic cirrhosis, the safe dose of iron may be lower than the normal upper intake level of 45 mg daily. Alcoholics may also be susceptible to vitamin A toxicity at low doses. This applies to all forms of vitamin A except beta-carotene.
Several B vitamins are adversely impacted by alcohol consumption. These B vitamins are essential for energy production. Thiamin deficiency is common among alcoholics. Alcohol impairs the absorption of thiamin, while increasing its elimination. Niacin is used up in the conversion and detoxification of alcohol. |
| For people with genetic predispositions to iron overload and those with alcoholic cirrhosis, the safe dose may be lower. Higher doses may be prescribed for pregnant women.
There has been some association between the intake of heme iron and the risk of heart attacks. When iron stores are high, heme iron absorption is not as effectively limited as is the absorption of non-heme iron. This may lead to a higher risk of heart attacks because of the free radical action of excess iron on LDL. |
| This acidity is not usually a problem if less than 100 mg are taken in any one dose. However, if doses are higher, such as one gram or above, the acidity may irritate the intestines or urinary tract, causing mild discomfort or diarrhea. To avoid this acidity, vitamin C supplements can be ascorbated with a mineral.
Ascorbation is a process where an acidic vitamin is combined chemically with an alkaline mineral. Calcium ascorbate and sodium ascorbate are the most common forms, although many other minerals can be ascorbated. The ascorbated vitamin C is easier for the body to transport. |

While about 70 percent of a dose of 5-HTP taken orally is delivered to the bloodstream for transport to the brain for conversion to serotonin, only about 3 percent of a dose of L-trytophan is eventually converted into serotonin. ž5-HTP passes into the brain immediately, while tryptophan must compete with other proteins to be transported across the blood-brain barrier. ž5-HTP raises levels of other brain neurotransmitters, including melatonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. L-tryptophan does not have this effect. |

• Pycnogenol, 100 mg twice daily. The antioxidants in Pycnogenol may enhance the benefits of L-arginine.
• Vitamin C, 500 mg to 1,000 mg daily. Vitamin C enhances the activity of L-arginine.

The effective dose varies widely between individuals, and you can safely work your way up to 9 mg (9,000 meg), if necessary. Do not drive after taking melatonin, and do not use any sharp objects or other tools that might cause injury. If you feel groggy the next day, you have taken too much.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC). This potent antioxidant may be of particular benefit in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that involves insulin resistance, elevated testosterone levels, and infertility. In one study, researchers asked twenty women with PCOS to take 600 mg of NAC three times daily for four weeks. By the end of the study, the women's insulin levels had decreased by one-third, and their testosterone levels dropped by more than half. |

The daily dose of fluoride that people are now receiving in fluoridated communities far exceeds the dose of fluoride that was found to depress the thyroid gland. Because of fluoridation, millions of people are now suffering from hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). This condition is currently one of the more common medical problems in the United States. Today, over 150 symptoms can be identified in hypothyroidism. Almost all correlate with known symptoms of fluoride poisoning. |

Many users die, however, from a dose that should not be fatal to them. Shepard Siegel and some fellow researchers have suggested that the failure of tolerance on the day of the overdose is a function of context. In an experiment with rats they found that if a large dose of a drug is given in the presence of cues that are associated with sublethal doses, the rats were more likely to survive than those given the same dose in a situation not associated with the drug at an earlier time. The tolerance of both groups of rats was lowered when the drug was given in an unfamiliar environment. |

We have 87 percent more bio available saponins -- the actual steroidal saponin that does the job in a dose, compared to 3 to 7 percent in a powdered dose. So, imagine how much more powdered dose you would have to feed to try and get that level. When you're feeding that much powder, it upsets the digestive tract. When you're doing a concentration of yucca, which is one drop per 10 pounds of body weight, that one drop in your cat's food is not going to make the cat turn away from it. If you tried to put three or four capfuls into their food, they wouldn't eat it. |
