| DIAGNOSING AND TREATING SHINGLES
If you feel a strange sensation that you suspect may be shingles, your best bet is to see a dermatologist at once. diagnosing the early signs of shingles, before the rash appears, can be difficult. The rash itself can also be misleading, because it may resemble herpes simplex or contact dermatitis. A trained dermatologist will be able to spot the symptoms of shingles immediately and confirm the diagnosis by a viral culture. |

Essentially they took the syndromic approach by diagnosing diseases based on the existence of certain symptoms. Over the years, the DSM has gone through four updates, with a fifth in the works. Although psychiatrists fiercely argue among themselves about certain diagnoses in the DSM, for better or worse it has put all psychiatrists on the same page. Schizophrenia for one psychiatrist is pretty much schizophrenia for every other psychiatrist. |

Unfortunately, diagnosing magnesium deficiency is very difficult. Typically, serum magnesium levels are tested where only a trace amount of the body's total magnesium is located. Cellular levels of magnesium are much more sensitive and accurate; however, these can be tested only in research labs, not in hospitals. This is why magnesium deficiency is so underdiagnosed.
We all need at least 400-500 mg of magnesium in supplementation.

Patients come to see me from all over the world because it's not always easy to find a physician who has experience diagnosing hormone imbalances and BHRT as the preferred treatment. BHRT is not yet taught in medical schools, and most physicians remain uneducated about it.
However, since the World Health Institute has begun detailing the significant health risks of synthetic hormone replacement, this trend is shifting. In the last several years, hundreds of doctors have attended national continuing medical education forums on the subject of BHRT. |

They rarely, if ever, touch the bodies of their patients, diagnosing instead on the basis of astrological charts, visual examination of the patient's blood and urine, and close attention to the patient's spoken testimony and social position (see Figures 1 and 2). Surgery is only performed as a desperate last resort, since few survive its rigours and none opt for its agonies readily in a world without antiseptics and anaesthesia. |

BER tests require no needles, are painless and are primarily used by naturopaths, homeopaths and acupuncturists because the information they provide is relevant to the holistic philosophy of diagnosing problems and treating them before disease or abnormal conditions actually appear.
Vegatests
Vegatests use points on the skin to determine specific allergies. Vials of a possible allergic substance are transmitted through the Vega machine and the patient is connected to it. |
| There are also lesser known methods of diagnosing asthma, which must be considered to be of dubious value. þHair sampling, where hairs from your head are examined under a microscope to make a diagnosis. þVEGA testing, in which the electrical conductivity in your body is measured by machine. VEGA testing is also used to detect allergies. þSEC (segmental electrograph) testing: a diagnostic method where segments of the body are stimulated in turn. The SEG machine gives readings that indicate how the parts of the body react to this mild stimulus and from them a diagnosis may be made. |

Breath tests are the most widely used method for diagnosing carbohydrate maldigestion/malabsorption. The principle behind breath tests is that lactose, which escapes digestion in the small intestine, is fermented by bacteria in the colon, producing short-chain fatty acids and hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane (in some individuals). One breath test measures the amount of l3C02 excreted in the breath following administration of 13C-lactose [41]. |

However, diagnosing Alzheimer's in its early stages is often difficult.
One of the factors weighing most heavily on families dealing with a loved one who suffers from Alzheimer's is its cost: $16,000 per year for the care of affected patients, including the costs of nursing homes, doctors, and medications. Once a patient with Alzheimer's loses the ability to care for him- or herself, the disorder quickly progresses to a total loss of function and eventual death. |

For Muscle Aches and Joint Pain
Let's say you are another twenty-eight-year-old whose illness started with a fever, a sore throat, swollen glands, and body aches. Eventually the symptoms of a potential infection—fever, sore throat, and tender glands—go away, and you're left with continuing achiness. Your discomfort gradually gets worse, so that any little motion causes you to feel horrible pain all over your body and extreme tenderness to the touch. |

While doctors don't seem particularly interested in diagnosing coffee addiction or "Starbucks syndrome," some psychiatrists have argued that caffeine withdrawal should be listed as an official psychiatric diagnosis. They have pointed out that various symptoms, such as irritability, depression, muscle pain, migraines and other types of headaches, and even flulike symptoms, can be triggered when people miss their caffeine fix.
The increasing consumption of caffeine led to yet another problem: not only were people sleeping less, but they were also sleeping less rest-fully. |

| Stuart Weiss, a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, says he is diagnosing more and more people in their 20s and 30s with double diabetes. "Many are type Is who have already been diabetic for years, and who are also eating a hypercaloric diet and require a lot more insulin," he says. "They become obese, and then become insulin-resistant."
COMPLEX TREATMENT
Kaufman says treatment for double diabetes may be more complex than what is needed for patients who have either type 1 or type 2 alone. |
| Errors in diagnosing sinusitis are a leading cause of unnecessary treatments, including the use of antibiotics and even surgery. CAUSES AND DIAGNOSIS
There are many small sinus cavities—over the eyes, along and behind the nose, above the teeth, etc. These cavities have tiny holes (ostia) that drain into the nose. Anything that interferes with normal drainage causes mucus to accumulate. This includes colds, allergies and other conditions that trigger congestion.
Many people have anatomical abnormalities, such as a deviated septum, that inhibit drainage. |

Treating back pain involves first diagnosing the cause of the pain. For example, back pain caused by a pulled muscle is treated differently to that caused by a herniated vertebral disc. The goal of treatment is to make sure a serious problem is not present, and to relieve symptoms.
To treat back pain caused by muscle strain: This is the most common type of back pain. Treatment may involve ergo-dynamic education (learning how to lift correctly), exercises to strengthen abdominal muscles, and weight loss to decrease strain on back muscles. |

But we know now that the systolic reading is as—if not more—important in diagnosing and treating high blood pressure. While it is true that systolic blood pressure does tend to climb in most people as they grow older, it still shouldn't be considered normal, because it comes with an increased risk of stroke, heart disease, and kidney disease.
Because blood pressure readings are affected throughout the course of the day by changes in activity, stress, fluid levels, and diet, I think it's a good idea to have a reading taken as often as possible. |

Conventional medicine aims at diagnosing the cause of the toothache and treating the underlying problem. In the interim, take pain relief, such as 800 mg of ibuprofen three times a day, as needed (but for a short period of time only).
Prevention: Preventing toothache involves rigorous oral hygiene including daily flossing, proper brushing, and avoiding sugar and processed foods in your diet. Maintaining good oral flora with probiotics is also helpful. Look for a product with colony-forming units of bifidus in the billions. |
| Treating catarrh first involves diagnosing the cause and ruling out any problematic illnesses. It is necessary to assess whether the catarrh is triggered by a viral infection or is an allergic reaction.
Decongestants: Over-the-counter decongestants, such as pseudephedrine, and nasal sprays, such as oxymetazoline (afrin), are effective for immediate, short-term alleviation. They can be used to relieve discomfort while searching for the cause of the discharge, but tend to cause rebound congestion if used for longer than three days. |

An after-meal or postprandial measurement as well as a random glucose measurement is also quite helpful in diagnosing diabetes. A postprandial measurement is usually made 2 hours after a meal, while a random measurement is made anytime during the day without regard to the time of the last meal. Any reading greater than 200 mg/dL (11 mmol/L) is considered indicative of diabetes.
The "gold standard" in diagnosing diabetes, however, is the oral glucose tolerance test (GTT), a more functional test of blood sugar control that is performed in a doctor's office or a lab (see Table 1.2). |

Women who have one vertebral fracture are at high risk for a subsequent fracture,31 which makes diagnosing a single vertebral fracture that much more important.
Body weight should also be recorded. A body weight less than 127 pounds or a body mass index less than 21 kg/m2 is a risk factor for low BMD. Thinness is associated with low bone density and a twofold increased risk of fracture, especially in older women.32
Laboratory Tests. Laboratory tests are important in determining the cause of the low bone density or osteoporosis. |
