By virtually eliminating the magnetic properties of the compound, Rosenbaum eventually had created spin-glass anarchy—the atoms of this Frankenstein monstrosity pointing any way they liked. Being able to manipulate the essential property of elements like holmium by creating weird new compounds so cavalierly was a little like having ultimate control over matter itself. With these new spin-glass compounds, Rosenbaum could virtually change the properties of the compound at will; he could make the atoms orient in a particular direction, or freeze them in some random pattern. |

With these new spin-glass compounds, Rosenbaum could virtually change the properties of the compound at will; he could make the atoms orient in a particular direction, or freeze them in some random pattern.
Nevertheless, his omnipotence had a limit. Rosenbaum's holmium compounds behaved themselves in some regards, but not in others. One thing he could not do was to get them to obey the laws of temperature. No matter how cold Rosenbaum made his refrigerator, the atoms inside them resisted any sort of ordered orientation, like an army refusing to march in step. |

It reduced the flow of blood in the coronary arteries, just as the organic compound would have done.46 The electromagnetic signatures of the compounds were having the same effect as the compounds themselves. At one point, to silence his many critics, Beneviste recorded the signals on a computer floppy disk in Paris, and mailed the disk to colleagues at Northwestern University in Chicago. |

As it turns out, blends of certain synthetic compounds do create a synergistic effect; two weakly estrogenic compounds create a more potent hit than one compound on its own. The harmful effects of endocrine disruptors are increased two- to threefold when these different chemicals act in unison to block endocrine receptors from normal functioning. Nevertheless, the Environmental Protection Agency is waiting to study the effects of low-dose exposure to endocrine-mimicking chemicals further, believing it "would be premature to require routine testing of substances for low-dose effect. |

For example, originally researchers focused on allicin, the compound that can be blamed for garlic's taste and smell. But now researchers are looking at the other sulfur compounds in garlic (including DADS and SAC, S-allylcysteine), as well as nonsulfur components like the phytochemicals saponins. I suspect that, as with many plant foods, the many different compounds in whole garlic and onions offer better protection because they interact with each other in complex ways that are not yet known or understood. |

Other studies identified the primary anti-mutagenic compound in green tea specifically as EGCG. Other anti-mutagenic compounds in green tea include caffeine and vitamin C.7
Anti-mutagenic compounds can be further categorized according to their modes of action. Experts suggest that desmutagens inactivate mutagens through chemical or enzymatic interactions with them, thereby preventing the alteration of genes. |

The other type of standardization is based on manufacturers guaranteeing the presence of a certain percentage of what is known as a marker compound. These marker compounds are usually not active constituents, and while they may help to identify the herb, they are not indicators of therapeutic activity. An echinacea product standardized to caffeic acid or a St. John's wort product standardized to 0.3 percent hypericin is virtually meaningless. Neither of these compounds represents the therapeutic activity or quality of the herb. |

This tiny difference in one of the compound rings was critical as it rendered benzo[e]pyrene harmless to humans. With this particular chemical, the light passed right through the substance unaltered.
Popp kept puzzling over this difference and kept playing around with light and compounds. He performed his test on thirty-seven other chemicals, some cancer-causing, some not. After a while, it got so that he could predict which substances could cause cancer. In every instance, the compounds that were carcinogenic took the UV light, absorbed it, and changed the frequency. |

Rosenbaum then had wreaked havoc on the original salt compound, instructing the lab to rip out a number of the atoms of holmium, bit by bit, and replace them with yttrium, a silvery metal without such natural magnetic attraction, until he was left with a strange hybrid of a compound, a salt called lithium holmium yttrium tetrafluoride.
By virtually eliminating the magnetic properties of the compound, Rosenbaum eventually had created spin-glass anarchy—the atoms of this Frankenstein monstrosity pointing any way they liked. |

Methylation occurs when a compound called a methyl group binds to a gene and changes the way that gene expresses itself, without actually changing the DNA. The compounds in the vitamin supplements include methyl donors—molecules that form the methyl groups that become these genetic stop signs.
Thin and brown weren't the only benefits the mice gained through methylation. The agouti gene in mice is linked to higher rates of diabetes and cancer. The mice with the switched-off agouti genes had significantly lower rates of cancer and diabetes than their parents. |

The expression of the thrifty genotype and the hunger of the "monster" is largely the result of the impact of two opposing hormones secreted by fat cells in the abdomen: adiponectin, a compound that helps insulin work better, and resistin, a compound that blocks insulin's action. The levels of these fat-derived hormones go a long way in determining the body's sensitivity to the hormone insulin. |

While there is still much to learn about the beneficial effects of green tea in relation to body weight, research findings point to two components of the tea: caffeine and the epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, which is a plant compound known as a catechin found in green tea. Originally it was simply hypothesized that the caffeine was the compound most responsible for promoting weight loss but we are now learning that green tea—as well as many black teas—has mild "thermogenic properties" beyond what can be explained by its caffeine content. |

Unlike lignans, which attach to estrogen and help to reduce estrogen overload through excretion, soy products actually have the potential to compound the problem.
Consumed in moderation, soy products can be healthy food choices for some people. Nevertheless, for the overweight woman or man with a preexisting condition of estrogen dominance, eating too much soy can compound an underlying hormone imbalance. Also, nutritional researchers have identified that in some cases soy products act as a potent antithyroid agent, suppressing thyroid function and causing or worsening hypothyroidism. |

A fracture is a break in a bone that can be either simple or compound. compound fractures break through the skin, presenting increased risk of infection due to exposure to bacteria and other harmful elements. All fractures must be treated by a doctor and will, at the least, require immobilization of the affected area with a cast. Some forms of fractures will require surgery. |

An independent testing firm analyzed 16 brands of garlic supplements and found that few products clearly label how much active compound they contain; even when they do, it's often not accurate.
It's probably not one component in garlic and onions that holds the wealth of health benefits, either, but a combination of substances. For example, originally researchers focused on allicin, the compound that can be blamed for garlic's taste and smell. |

Caffeine is the only chemical compound I don't like in this formula. I certainly realize caffeine can be a very effective weight loss compound, because it boosts your metabolism. It's a chemical compound that excites the nervous system. But at the same time, it can also deplete the adrenal glands over time, leaving you exhausted. Caffeine can also be highly addictive, meaning that if you take this product on a daily basis, you might come to the point where you need the product just to function normally, in much the same way as people need a daily cup of coffee just to wake up. |

Yet another study noted that DADS and another organosulfur compound, DAS (diallyl sulfide), were best at increasing phase II enzymes that work to detoxify carcinogens.
So where are all these awesome organosulfur compounds? If you eat garlic and onions together, will you be more likely to cover your bases and get plenty of DADS and SEC? Scientists are still answering that question, but given what a delicious flavor that is, there's certainly no harm in enjoying them together as often as you can. |

REPPED: A compound found in blueberries shows promise of preventing colon cancer, according to a new study. Scientists at Rutgers University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a joint study on animals, and found that the compound -- called pterostilbene -- lessened pre-cancerous lesions and inhibited genes involved in inflammation. Researchers presented the study at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in March.
"This study underscores the need to include more berries in the diet, especially blueberries," said study leader Bandaru Reddy, Ph.D. |

In a second phase of the study, researchers will inject diabetic volunteers with a compound called BCG, which, like the compound given to mice to kill off errant T cells, stimulates the human immune system in a way that eliminates only the faulty T cells that attack beta cells. The study, which will include forty patient volunteers, will be double-blind—patients will either receive a placebo (no drug) or BCG. The researchers will evaluate whether BCG reduces the number of defective cells that attack and kill the insulin-producing cells in type 1 diabetics. |

Some of those compounds in the sprig of thyme may affect my digestion of the dish I add it to, helping to break down one compound or stimulate production of an enzyme needed to detoxify another. We have barely begun to understand the relationships among foods in a cuisine.
But we do understand some of the simplest relationships among foods, like the zero-sum relationship: If you eat a lot of one thing, you're probably not eating a lot of something else. This fact alone may have helped lead the diet-heart researchers astray. |

It turns out that COX-2 inhibitors block the production of prostacyclin (a member of the family of lipid molecules known as eicosanoids) without affecting synthesis of another compound called thromboxane A-2. This in turn leads to a depression of prostaglandin 1-2, a compound that increases blood pressure as well as the ability of blood to clot, which leads to more heart attacks and strokes.

This is the same as with those who have genetic tendencies to migraine or high blood pressure. It may take added compounded trauma to make the symptom appear.

One compound also curtailed male sexual behavior and both substances contributed to the growth of breast and prostate cancer cell cultures. The crushed corncob used at Baylor was likely shipped from central Iowa where many of the animal reproductive problems were reported.
Researchers isolated the same compounds from store-bought fresh corn, corn tortillas, and genetically engineered corn. |
