| In large doses, vitamin C inhibits the effects of histamine, a body chemical that causes sniffles and other cold symptoms. Yet there's no evidence that reducing histamine in this way has any effect on cold symptoms—and studies have not shown that it prevents colds.
Caution: Vitamin C is cleared through the kidneys. Taking large amounts can cause the vitamin to crystallize and result in kidney stones. Drink more water than usual if you decide to take extra vitamin C—and don't exceed 250 to 500 mg daily.

Subjects were randomized into one of four groups: Echinaforce (n=55), Echinacea concentrate (n=64), Echinacea purpurea (n=63), and placebo (n=64) with instructions to take 2 tablets 3 times daily with onset of cold symptoms. Treatment was not to exceed 7 days. Reduction in the complaint index of 12 primary symptoms associated with the common cold was significantly higher in the Echinacea concentrate (p=0.003) and Echinaforce (p=0.02) groups than in the placebo group (Brinkeborn, 1999). |

In all seven of these studies, subjects who took andrographis after the onset of cold symptoms reported faster recovery compared to subjects who took placeboes or medication.
Researchers concluded that andrographis may be effective in treating "uncomplicated" infection in the upper respiratory tract (throat, sinuses and ears). According to previous laboratory trials, andrographis extract doesn't actually kill the organisms that make you sick - at least not directly. Instead, the herbal compound boosts your immune system and stimulates natural antibodies. |

| Drinking hot tea eases cold symptoms.
True: Black and green tea both contain theophylline, a mild bronchodilator. Drinking tea when you have a cold may open the airways and make it easier to breathe. The heat and steam from the liquid also thin mucus and ease congestion.
Chicken soup is also a traditional remedy for colds—but don't expect too much. Though it provides extra fluids and the steam eases congestion, chicken soup cannot cure a cold.

Zinc lozenges have been reported to be effective in some studies and ineffective in others. Efficacy may depend on whether the zinc is provided in a molecular form, as demonstrated by a re-analysis of findings from 10 double-blind, placebo-controlled trials published between 1984 and 2004. |

Distinctions were made between using vitamin C as continuous prophylaxis or after the onset of cold symptoms. For the incidence of colds during prophylaxis, 29 studies involving 11,077 subjects were identified for inclusion in the review. Although doses as high as 2 g/day did not affect incidence in a subgroup of 23 community studies (n= 10,435), a subgroup of 6 studies (n=642) showed a 50% reduction in common cold incidence among runners, skiers, and soldiers exposed to significant cold and/or stress. |

ZINC LOZENGES
Many people use zinc lozenges to treat cold symptoms. There are still questions about the effectiveness of these lozenges. Zinc intakes well above the tolerable upper intake level (UL) can result from frequent use of zinc lozenges. Short-term use of zinc lozenges has not been found to cause problems from excesses of zinc. However, frequent use of zinc lozenges for over six weeks can result in copper deficiency. Use of zinc sprays in the nose has the potential to cause loss of smell. Since this type of loss of smell is permanent, nasal zinc sprays and gels should be avoided. |

The same review found that a daily amount of 2 grams or more was superior to a daily amount of 1 gram at reducing the duration of cold symptoms.
Zinc (page 614) interferes with viral replication in test tubes, may interfere with the ability of viruses to enter cells of the body, may help immune cells to fight a cold, and may relieve cold symptoms when taken as a supplement.3 In double-blind trials, zinc lozenges have reduced the duration of colds in adults4'5 but have been ineffective in children. |

Since then many studies have shown that regular supplemental vitamin C intake, in the range of 2 to 6 grams (2,000 to 6,000 mg) daily, does in fact reduce cold symptoms. In a review article, Harri Hemila, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Helsinki, analyzed twenty-one vitamin C studies and found that supplemental vitamin C reduced cold symptoms and duration by about one-third.
Although Hemila published his analysis in 1994, more recent studies have confirmed his findings. |

Not for nothing is chicken soup known as Jewish penicillin.
There's a reason chicken soup has a reputation as being good for the soul as well as for the body, and it's called TLC (tender loving care). As Stephen Rennard, M.D., Larson Professor of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, told CNN, "You can't rule out the TLC factor.... If you know someone prepared soup for you by hand, that might have an effect. |
| Note: To alleviate cold symptoms, for several days try lozenges providing 13 to 2 3 mg of zinc gluconate or zinc gluconate-glycine every two hours while awake. The best effect is obtained when lozenges are used at the first sign of a cold.
Zinc: The Missing Link for Superimmunity
Studies have shown that severe zinc deficiency significantly depresses immune function because zinc is needed for both the development and the activation of a very important class of white blood cells (lymphocytes) called T cells. |

| Flu viruses are much more powerful than typical cold viruses. cold symptoms are mainly confined to the head, neck and chest. Flu causes more general symptoms—fever, body aches, nausea, cramping, vomiting and severe fatigue. Flu also can develop into bronchitis. In the worst cases, it can lead to pneumonia and other severe respiratory diseases that are sometimes fatal, especially in seniors or other people who have weakened immune systems.
START WITH PREVENTION
•Avoid spending time with people who already are sick, particularly if they are coughing or sneezing. |

According to these earlier studies, the effect of ascorbic acid supplementation on severity and duration of cold symptoms has been repeatedly, though not consistently, shown to be measurable and statistically significant, with a median decrease of 22% compared to placebo (Hemila, 1997a). Some authorities have called these effects minor at best (AMA, 1986).
Three earlier studies reported significant reductions in incidence of pneumonia with ascorbic acid supplementation, including a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Hemila, 1997b). |

They end up feeling lousy for 3 - 7 days, and the cold symptoms overtake them from head to toe, landing them in bed and causing them to miss work or family time. Most consumers walk around in a state that's highly susceptible to colds and flus.
But with the help of some botanical defenders, you can greatly enhance your ability to overcome such infections, reducing your down time to a single night instead of a whole week. Thanks to products like Power Immune, I haven't experienced any sort of severe cold or flu in many years. Nothing has kept me sick in bed. |

These cold symptoms are your immune system's attempts to flush out the virus, so medications that suppress them can actually prolong your cold or cause a recurrence.
Colds can be difficult to distinguish from the flu. For adults, the presence of body aches and a fever usually indicates the flu, although a low-grade fever can sometimes exist alongside a cold. Children, on the other hand may experience fevers as a normal part of a cold. For more information about the flu, see Flu. If your cold symptoms persist, or if they are accompanied by yellow or green mucus, call your doctor. |

Aconite: This remedy is appropriate for treating cold symptoms that develop in response to exposure to dry, cold winds. If you feel well when going to bed, but wake in the early hours of the morning feeling restless, fearful, and feverish, usually with a hot head and chilly body, try Aconite. The throat is likely to feel hot and dry with a marked thirst. Always bear in mind that this remedy is best used at the first onset of symptoms that arise abruptly and dramatically.
Belladonna: Like Aconite, Belladonna is most effective when taken in the earliest stage of a cold. |

The best that can be said is that vitamin C reduces symptoms by 23% and may decrease the length of time you suffer from cold symptoms by about a day. The fact that vitamin C continues to be touted for the prevention of colds can only be attributed to the incredible marketing ability of the vitamin and supplement industry and the ability of the American public to suspend disbelief. |
