The veins contain valves that prevent blood from flowing back down due to gravity, but when these valves get weak, blood pools in the veins and causes them to bulge and/or become purplish.
The active ingredient in horse chestnut— escin—helps strengthen vein valves, walls, and capillaries.
Lack of good circulation can be another factor in causing varicose veins. Standing and sitting for long periods of time, as well as being obese, can increase the likelihood of getting them. So can pregnancy (though the condition usually gets better after delivery). |

Varicose Veins
Varicose veins can occur in the legs or in the anal or vulvar areas in pregnancy, due to hormonal softening of the muscular walls of the veins combined with the extra weight of pregnancy. Simple yoga and other nonstressful exercise can help by improving circulation from the lower body up to the trunk; it is also good to get your weight off your legs and put your feet up whenever possible. |

Varicose Veins
What's really the underlying cause of varicose veins? It's usually the lack of fitness and elasticity in your skin. Varicose veins are cosmetically ugly to look at when they appear to be popping out of your legs. They should, of course, be well contained underneath your skin. This, as with almost every other problem mentioned here, is almost always the result of chronic nutritional deficiencies.
Varicose veins can be prevented through good mineralization—including minerals like zinc— as well as the avoidance of hydrogenated oils. |

The risk increases with age as the walls of the veins can become weaker, causing blood that ought to be moving toward your heart to flow backward. Yet varicose veins are clearly not a "natural" part of aging, since they're practically nonexistent in third world countries. Prevention beats the heck out of treatment, but there are still plenty of things you can do if you already have them.
Horse chestnut seems to be the number-one compound of choice for treating varicose veins. |

There are three different types of valved veins located in the legs: deep veins embedded in muscles; superficial veins, which are just under the skin; and perforated veins, whose valves permit blood flow from superficial to deep veins. At the time that bulging starts to occur in the superficial veins, a woman should make a habit of rubbing several cotton balls soaked with persimmon juice on the backs of her legs every day in order to prevent the problem from becoming more severe. |

| People eating low-fiber diets pass smaller and harder stools, and the straining increases pressure in veins. The standardized American diet also increases the risk of obesity, which, while it doesn't technically "cause" varicose veins, can definitely raise the risk for them, especially if you have a genetic tendency toward them in the first place. Interestingly, the list of risk factors for varicose veins in general is pretty similar to the list of risk factors for heart disease. |

HEMORRHOIDS
Hemorrhoids are varicose (swollen or inflamed) veins in the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) and anus (external hemorrhoids). Hemorrhoids can bleed when irritated and can cause pain and itching. Hemorrhoids are typically caused by pressure on the veins in the rectum and anus. Factors that can cause the development of hemorrhoids include constipation, poor diet, lack of adequate fluids, lack of exercise, pregnancy, allergies, liver damage, long periods of sitting on hard surfaces, and tumors or cysts in the colon or rectum. Severe hemorrhoids may require surgery. |

Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids, or piles, as they are more commonly known, are the engorgement and swelling of the veins of the rectum. Hemorrhoids can result from straining to have bowel movements during constipation, or from pregnancy. They can also be caused by an accumulation of backed-up blood that has not been able to circulate through a congested liver. One reason why rectal veins become inflamed and swell is because of pressure buildup between the rectum and liver to which they directly connect. |

Dilation of veins and venules (small veins) can occur anywhere in the body. It always indicates an obstruction of blood flow.8
Poor blood flow through the liver always affects the heart. When the organs of the digestive system become weakened by an increase in venous pressure, they become congested and begin to accumulate harmful waste, including debris from cells that have been broken down. The spleen becomes enlarged while it is dealing with the extra workload associated with removing damaged or worn-out blood cells. |

All seem to help strengthen the delicate walls of the veins and capillaries. Foods richest in these substances include berries (blueberries and blackberries) as well as cherries, grapes, and tea. Add these foods to your diet and take a supplement of grape seed extract, which is rich in these compounds.
4. Vitamin C. Vitamin C in combination with a bioflavonoid called hesperidin has been used in research (often with butcher's broom) with good effect. It helps promote better circulation and strengthens the walls of the veins. |

Hemorrhoids are veins distended by years of forceful straining on the toilet.
Varicose veins form when the valves within the leg veins are damaged through years of straining to move the bowels.
A hiatus hernia results from the stomach being forced upward by efforts to move a stubborn stool downward. þThe lower esophageal sphincter (LES) becomes incompetent when it is displaced and no longer supported by the muscular diaphragm.
GERD (acid reflux) occurs when the LES becomes incompetent. |

Because of the need to strain to eliminate the stools, there is more back-pressure on the veins around the anus; this will result in hemorrhoids if the problem is there for a long time.
With chronic constipation, there may be a large amount of fecal material in the colon, which exerts pressure on the large veins leading from the legs to the heart. When this is present long enough, it may lead to varicose veins in people who are, for reasons not known, more susceptible to this vascular problem. |

Atherosclerosis: Hardening of the Arteries
The adult human body contains a complex circulatory system composed of about 100,000 miles of blood vessels, of which there are three types: arteries, veins, and capillaries. Arteries carry oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood away from the heart and to cells; capillaries connect arteries to veins and facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and veins carry oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart. A robust blood supply is therefore vital to good health. |

Although the heart is a muscle full of blood, which it pumps throughout the body, it requires its own veins and arteries to supply it with nutrients and energy and to remove waste products. The coronary arteries and veins serve this function. If, for some reason, the coronary arteries do not deliver sufficient blood to the heart, a condition called angina pectoralis can develop. Stroke is a consequence of a similar interruption of blood supply to the brain. Either decrease in blood supply is usually traced to a blockage of key arteries by blood clots or cholesterol plaque. |

Backache
It may not be possible to find an herb that is safe during pregnancy that is also a good treatment for backache. Gentle yoga stretches; walking and swimming; chiropractic adjustments; physical therapy; sleeping with pillows to support the legs, back, and belly; wearing flat heels; and getting plenty of minerals can all help in easing backache. |

The main vein, called the portal vein, does not have one-way valves such as are in the arm and leg veins. Therefore, anything that restricts blood flow, such as congestion in the liver, causes a backpressure and consequent inflammation and swelling of the rectal veins, either internally or externally.
To prevent hemorrhoid conditions, one needs to adopt a healthful lifestyle, have regular exercise, and detoxify the bowel. For relief of hemorrhoid pain, a suppository-sized piece of raw white potato can be inserted into the rectum and changed as needed. |

| As the veins swell, the legs and feet can become plagued by itching, and sores can develop that become open or ulcerated wounds, a serious problem. Another common outcome of varicose veins is phlebitis, characterized by inflammation within veins and clotting of blood. If a blood clot breaks away from a vein, a sudden stroke or heart attack can ensue. Vitamin E, vitamin C, and chelation therapy can all alleviate the suffering associated with varicose veins. |
| Horse chestnut, butcher's broom, vitamin E with tocotrienols, and vitamin C with quercetin are beneficial for veins and feet.
Alternative therapies such as chelation therapy, massage of the legs, and magnetic wraps are helpful for varicose veins. Since so many people suffer from varicose veins, it is unfortunate that they remain unaware of the varied alternative treatments available. Even Epsom salts can make a difference.

Lycium has a number of other modern uses. The fruit has hepatoprotective activity; it helps regenerate liver cells and protects against liver damage caused by medications or hepatotoxic chemicals. The fruit also has been shown to enhance the effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy while protecting cancer patients from leukopenia (decreased white blood cell counts).
The dried fruit can be eaten like raisins, cooked with rice, or made into a tea. |

This not only raises the venous blood pressure in the liver, but also raises it in all the organs and areas of the body that drain used blood through their respective veins into the liver's portal vein. Restricted blood flow in that portal vein causes congestion, particularly in the spleen, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, gallbladder, and small and large intestines. This can lead to an enlargement of these organs, to a reduction of their ability to remove cellular waste products, and to a clogging of their respective veins. |
