According to the FDA's law, however, if you were to hold up an orange and say "This orange is the cure for the disease of scurvy," you would go to jail for selling a "drug" without a license. According to the FDA, as soon as you made a disease claim in reference to taking an orange, the orange no longer is an orange, but magically became a "drug" according to the FDA. And since that "drug" has not been patented or approved by the FDA, you are selling a "drug" without a license, which is a criminal offense. You go to jail. The "drug" is obviously not a drug, it is an orange! |

At that time I was living in Florida, and I had orange trees in my yard along with grapefruit trees and everything else. I said, "Well, I could actually do that. I could pick bushels of oranges where I live in Florida. I have better things to do with my time than spend every waking minute eating oranges. I would rather take them in capsule form where I can just gulp a whole bunch of them and it is very easy. |

But did you know that there is so much sugar in a glass of orange juice that, in an attempt to appear healthy, Coca-Cola® is comparing its sugar content to that found in orange juice? The obvious implication is that their soft drink is not a health risk because of its sugar levels. But just the opposite is true. orange juice is not a healthy drink because of its high sugar levels.
An 8-ounce glass of orange juice has almost the same amount of sugar in it as a regular Coke, a whopping eight to nine teaspoons of sugar. Guess how many teaspoons of sugar are necessary in your bloodstream? |

The garden had dozens of fruit trees," she said, clicking through images of banana, lemon, and orange trees. "But then he showed me these wildly exotic fruits." There was the maranon, a red-orange fruit five times richer in vitamin C than oranges; anona, which looks like a misshapen, thick-skinned pear known to have selective toxicity against various types of cancer cells; and wild ginger, a great source of vitamin Bg, magnesium, and manganese. "All of these are antioxidant powerhouses associated with disease prevention and longer life," Eliza informed us. |

In addition, part of the program calls for taking a teaspoon of cream of tartar powder in a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice (not concentrated or processed) each evening before going to bed. This helps to remove nicotine from the body. He said that since nicotine tends to accumulate around two glands in the brain called the hypothalamus and amygdala, the mix of cream of tartar and orange juice helps to drain nicotine from the glands during sleep. When nicotine is removed from the body, it normally sets up a craving for the nicotine to be replenished. |

That's why pasteurized orange juice, for example, is nutritionally inferior to freshly-squeezed orange juice.
The same is true with pomegranate juice, or blueberry juice, or even cherry juice. Nothing is quite as good as the fresh juices, which is why I strongly recommend the daily consumption of blended smoothies using a Vita-Mix and some raw, fresh ingredients. When you can get pomegranate seeds in season, it's always better to eat them fresh. They're crunchy and sweet, so buy 'em when you can. |

Orange merchants. Did they justify their assumptions on the basis of careful research? Of course not. Did these assumptions (presented as fact) sound good to the marketing people? Of course they did. Would I eat an orange to get my vitamin
C? No. Would I eat an orange because it is a healthy plant food with a complex network of chemicals that almost certainly offer health benefits? Absolutely.
I played a small role in this story a couple of decades ago. In the 1970s and 1980s, I appeared in a television ad for citrus fruits. |

AGENT ORANGE
Soy protein shows up in many food products, but who would suspect that manufacturers might add it to orange juice? A document filed with the Patents and Trademarks Office reveals that beverages such as orange juice can be "stably clouded by the suspension of soy protein particles therein. A new procedure is provided to cause such suspension, in which pectin prevents suspended protein particles from aggregating to the point of settling out."

Cod liver oil is another good source, although milk or orange juice fortified with vitamin D has some, but there are only 100 units in an 8 oz glass of vitamin D-fortified milk and orange juice. So you would have to drink 10 glasses of milk or 10 glasses of orange juice a day. You cannot get your vitamin D easily from your diet. And even if you take a multivitamin, a multivitamin contains 400 international units of vitamin D, only 40% of what you need. |

Grab a coffee or tea, maybe an apple or orange (after the first 2 weeks), and enjoy your bar. Here are some other tips:
Breakfast: Many hotels have those awful scrambled eggs on the buffet bar: Don't sweat it! Eat them, and leave the hash browns and toast alone. Or order poached eggs or an omelet with veggies. Substitute sliced tomatoes for toast and potatoes, and make sure they don't serve you the complimentary orange juice. If they pour it, you'll drink it. |

In my case I prefer it with lemonade or with orange juice in the morning. I love orange juice, and I put it into the orange juice and eat it wit the beverage. My wife uses it over a salad. There are people who love hamburgers – you know, "hamburger" is a bad word today -- and they like to spread it over the hamburger before cooking. They find a way.
Mike: Chia hamburgers.
Ayerza: Yes, it's funny but it's true. There are many ways to do it.
Mike: Well, those are good suggestions. Because it's a nutty taste, and it's crunchy but it's not too hard. It's not like chewing on stones or anything. |

Tips: Eat a salad or other high-fiber foods before consuming juices made from concentrate (including pom juice, grape juice, orange juice, blueberry juice or even apple juice). These might include a bowl of oatmeal with extra oat bran, a fresh apple (which contains plenty of fiber), whole grains that are well-chewed, or fiber supplements such as glucomannan. You might also add cinnamon to your oatmeal or breakfast cereal, since cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar and effectively lowers the glycemic index of anything you eat during the same meal. |
