BPA could still be present in liquids from canned sources, however, so if you use canned infant formula and empty it into these Born Free baby bottles, it doesn't mean the bottle will filter out the BPA chemical, it just means the bottle won't contribute more bisphenol A.
Currently, 95 percent of baby bottles sold today contain bisphenol A. That means the majority of infants are being exposed to this toxic chemical through their feeding. Switching to a BPA-free baby bottle is extremely important for protecting infant health. |
| Improved air flow
These bottles from New Born Free feature other infant health features as well, including a unique air flow design that reportedly reduces the need to burp your baby after feeding from the bottle. The flow also reduces pressure differences inside the bottle, which, we were told, can help reduce ear infections in infants (because air pressure differences can push bacteria right into the ear canal through an infant's eustachian tubes). We weren't able to test this feature, so you'll have to test it yourself to see how well it works. |
| Infant health reminders
While you're at it, remember these important points about infant health:
Breastfeeding is the single most important thing you can do to enhance your baby's nutritional health.
Don't slather your children with personal care products made with industrial chemicals. Most sunscreen products, for example, are loaded with toxic chemicals that actually cause liver cancer and skin disorders. (A little sun is healthy for babies anyway. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and normal cell division. |

Don't breastfeed your babies! Use infant formula instead. It's more "high-tech." Cow's milk is obviously healthier for your babies than mother's milk, right? That's what the doc says... Result: Tens of millions of mothers stopped breastfeeding their babies, resulting in widespread nutritional deficiencies that impacted those children for life. The pushing of infant formula onto mothers continues today in hospitals across the country which are paid by infant formula manufacturers to give free samples of infant formula to new mothers, hoping they will stop breastfeeding and start buying formula. |

Best New infant Health Product" award from Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, following the Natural Products Expo West 2007 trade show in Anaheim, California. In this review, the Health Ranger offers a brief review of the Born Free company and its unique BPA-free baby bottle products.
Awareness about the health dangers of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical in many plastics, has been growing among consumers. BPA is a known estrogen mimicker, and can cause hormone-disrupting effects, toxicity, neurotoxicity, low sperm counts and even cancer. |
| As a long-time supporter of infant health and prenatal nutrition, I know the value of preventing disease at an early age rather than poisoning everybody with chemicals and waiting for diseases to develop later in life.
Bisphenol A is such a dangerous chemical that I have no doubt it will one day be banned from all food and beverage products (California is already trying to enact a ban on the chemical in children's products). But why wait for the legislators to get around to it? You can protect your baby's health today by buying BPA-free baby bottles from the Born Free company.

After the tour, I made a long trek through the courtyard to a far corner of the campus. There I found a side entrance to Evans Hall, a building that once housed unassuming classrooms for medical and dental students and now housed the university's Center for Health Promotion. |

A model more in keeping with the Expression Circuit model would allow the infant to control the Christmas lights, say, from pressure pads in the crib. The infant would thus gain instant visual feedback from his or her own movements. Brightly colored mobiles that move and shimmer when they are swatted are also a good way to provide feedback to older infants. |

What we're concerned about is the possibility that this may be imprint on the infant for the rest of his/her life. And I'll give you an example. There was a study done in Finland, and what they did was they looked at children 1 year of age that received 2000 units of vitamin D as a supplement for the first several years, and they followed them for over 20 years. And when they compared their risk of getting type 1 diabetes as young adults, they had an 80% reduced risk of developing type 1 diabetes.
Adams: Again, wow.
Dr. Holick: 80% decreased risk! |

A single injection results in extremely high levels of vitamin K in the blood. An infant's blood level of vitamin K may go up to 9000 times the normal adult level, tapering off to 100 times the normal adult level after four days. Lower doses of vitamin K are recommended for premature infants.
For mothers who refuse vitamin K injections for their infant, several oral doses of vitamin K are an alternative. If neither is chosen, dietary changes may reduce the possibility of vitamin K deficiency bleeding. |

For babies and young infants relaxation cannot be taught, but it is possible for a parent to help them relax by massage, and a relaxed baby will breathe more easily than a tense one. infant welfare clinics will often refer you to trained infant massage therapists. Massage may also help relieve colicky or fretful babies.
Relaxation can also be mastered by children through playing games like the elephant walk (see Chapter 6). And, of course, sometimes just a simple cuddle of a baby or child will be reassuring and comforting enough to relieve the child's distress. |

The amount of phytoestrogens that are in a day's worth of soy infant formula equals 5 birth control pills," says Mike Fitzpatrick, a New Zealand toxicologist.40 A study reported in The Lancet41 found that the "daily exposure of infants to isoflavones in soy infant-formulas is 6?1-fold higher on a bodyweight basis than the dose that has hormonal effects in adults consuming soy foods." This dose, equivalent to two glasses of soy milk per day, was enough to change menstrual patterns in women. |

Infant drops: Simethicone infant drops are worth a try but have had mixed reviews as to their effectiveness. If an infant over six months of age is colicky, dicyclomine is sometimes prescribed, however, it does have side effects such as sedation, blurred vision, dizziness, and dry mouth.

Herbs: The following formulas can be used to treat children suffering from colic. The herbs called for in these recipes are available from Chinese pharmacies or online. If the pain is not relieved after taking these remedies, consult a doctor immediately. |

The idea was to get mothers to feed their infants soda instead of infant formula, thereby altering the taste of the infant for life, creating a lifelong consumer of soft drinks. When I first uncovered this disturbing report, I thought it was perhaps the most evil thing a corporation could do to the health of infants. But now, psychiatry takes the prize.
Using four-year-olds as guinea pigs to test psychotropic drugs is more than merely unethical; it's predatory. It's Nazi-esque in its use of human beings for medical experiments, and yet it remains strangely acceptable across society. |

The primary indicator of colic is excessive crying; the infant is typically inconsolable during bouts of colic. Colic is thought to be caused by spasms in the intestines of an infant, and may be triggered by a milk/dairy allergy or intolerance, but the research is not conclusive.
Infantile colic is common, occurring in approximately one in ten babies, starting between the first and sixth week of life and usually continuing until the child is three or four months old. The baby usually cries, turns red in the face, may pass gas, clench his fists, and draw up his legs. |
| Administering digestive enzymes to the infant and mother before feeding times may also be highly beneficial.
ENZYME SUPPLEMENTATION SUGGESTIONS:
Infants: A half a capsule of digestive formula mixed in tepid water administered through a syringe or dropper into the child's mouth with every meal or bottle. If results are not satisfactory, increase dosage or repeat as often as needed, important note: Do not mix enzymes with breast milk or formula, since the enzymes will begin to hydrolyze it. Administer enzymes in water to the infant before the child ingests any food. |

This is why all women who breast-feed should supplement their breast-fed infant, or take enough vitamin D to normalize their own vitamin D level. Dr. Bruce Hollis of the Medical University of South Carolina found that the average nursing mother required 4,000 IU or more of vitamin D a day to optimize vitamin D concentrations in breast milk and normalize blood levels in the infants. He is currently studying the safe upper limits of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy. |

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS: Infants and toddlers raised on infant formulas rather than mother's breast milk are deprived of the omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. Low levels of essential fatty acids have been associated with a wide range of psychological disorders and a couple of studies reveal that omega-3 deficiency is nearly always present in autistic children.
DIGESTIVE ENZYMES: Autistic children sometimes have decreased digestive enzyme levels, which contributes to the body's inability to digest food sufficiently. |

The researchers looked at birth and death records for nearly four million babies born in 199 c to see if having more neonatologists in a region reduced the chances that an infant would die within the first month of life. They found that having about 4.3 neonatologists per ten thousand births in a region was best for reducing the chances of death. Any fewer specialists and the death rate began to climb among infants, particularly those born prematurely, at low birth weight, or with birth defects. |

Through breast milk, a nursing infant can reap the benefits of the teas the mother drinks. An infant will most benefit from drinking mother's milk fifteen to thirty minutes after Mom has had her tea. To figure out a dosage for children, you can follow one of two rules:
• Cowling's rule: Take the child's age at his or her next birthday and divide by 24. The resulting fraction is the amount of the adult dosage the child can have. For example, a five-year-old will be six at his next birthday. The number 6 divided by 24 equals V4; this child should have V4 of the adult dosage. |

Fitzpatrick estimated that an infant exclusively fed soy formula receives the estrogenic equivalent (based on body weight) of at least five birth control pills per day. By contrast, almost no phytoestrogens have been detected in dairy-based infant formula or in human milk, even when the mother consumes soy products.16
Fitzpatrick's research confirmed problems Richard and Valerie James were encountering with their own two children, and which other parents were recounting to them about children fed soy-based formula. |

Von Schenck, in a review of twenty-seven cases of infant B12 deficiency done in 1997, suggested that in many there was permanent damage. Seven were followed for twelve years after diagnosis. Five of these seven had abnormal neurological development twelve years later.24
Vegan pregnant mothers need to supplement with B!2 during pregnancy and the breast-feeding period. Goraya, in 1998 in India, reported that many infants had a B12 deficiency among breast-fed infants in low socioeconomic status. Some, but not all, responded to B12 therapy. |
