At present that balance is threatened by a terrible brew of market-driven self-indulgence, lack of moral direction and what sometimes seems like wilful misinterpretation of human rights legislation. And this confused state of mind is perpetuated by the media. As a frustrated headteacher wrote in The Times Educational Supplement, 'You can't watch daytime TV without being bombarded by commercials telling you that any accident you have should lead to compensation. |

Thus this knowledge is receiving increasing international attention in terms of its relationship to human rights as well as its relevance to modern science. The situation has created opposing pressures calling for the rights of local and indigenous peoples on the one hand and further exploitation of their knowledge on the other. Moran, King and Carlson [83], Manek and Lettington [95], Greaves [96], and Brush ans Stabinsky [97], indicate that the biggest problem with the orthodox intellectual property system is its focus on material aspects of knowledge at the expense of the cultural. |

We're seeing all of that happen right here in the United States under the Bush regime -- lots of war, military action, protectionism and a loss of privacy and basic human rights.
So, I am actually a huge proponent of free trade without all the profit mongers involved. I'm a proponent of fair trade, which is free trade between two countries where the people doing the work can make an honest living. |

A police officer lying about hitting a protestor, a despot lying about human rights abuses, an executive lying about dumping toxic waste—these are easier to catch in a world where everything can be on the record. The results might surprise us: corporations could be forced to become more transparent to stakeholders, and certain officials could be required to wear a recorder while on duty (already, some police cars automatically videotape police stops). Ironically, it could be a world where trust would be easier, because it would be harder to get away with lying.
Is all of this really possible? |

It's been around for 42 or 43 years, and they've been working with the indigenous through literacy -- that means Spanish literacy because their native language is Quechua, which was the Inca language -- and also through healthcare and human rights, and protecting their rights in other areas. Erpe is fundamentally a radio station. They communicate with the indigenous through the radio. The indigenous don't have much, but universally, they do have radios. We work with what they have. They man our post-harvest facility for us. |

In some ways, it is the prerequisite of all other human rights, because it is the ultimate substance that enables us to lead a healthy life . . . not to mention one of dignity and balance. Water is also the most beautiful of all molecular compounds and the most useful as well. In the biblical account of creation, we learn that "the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters" (Genesis 1:2).
The foundation of the entire living world is built on the many unique properties of water—the ultimate biological solvent. |

¦hh Change demands people who are willing to point out abuses of power, challenge authority, and hold wrongdoers accountable. The world needs courageous watchdogs, because it's their vigilance that creates and preserves the transparency that holds power in check.
This is precisely why being a watchdog tends to shorten your life expectancy. |
| For example, one group invited a woman lawyer and human rights specialist to their group to discuss women's rights ... Also, women acquired new skills through various trainings (e.g. umbrella-making, bamboo crafts, etc.)." Across their communities, these groups are driving the establishment of support systems that enable them to deal effectively with social issues ranging from malnutrition to women's rights. "We used to be afraid," comments one member of a women's SHG, "but now we have the group" (Demaret 2004). |
| The Copenhagen criteria for membership, which a country must accept if it wants to join the EU, call for each national government to guarantee full human rights plus respect for and protection of minorities. Psychiatry believes there is no child too young to diagnose as having psychiatric disorders. We take heart in learning that the UN human rights Commission deemed intellectual property rules on seed patenting an obstacle to human rights. And after a decade of deliberation—perhaps the most participatory process ever known for an international agreement—thousands of individuals, citizen organizations, and government representatives and groups ratified the Earth Charter, laying out fundamental principles for sustainable development. |

It is a violation of natural law, it is a violation of God’s law, and it is a violation of basic human rights, which include the right to grow and eat food and share that food with your neighbors along with information about what those foods can do to nourish them.
The FDA would like to imagine that it is the ultimate authority over all things health related and that only it can approve what words we might use to describe the fruits and vegetables we share with our neighbors. |

Furthermore, since utilitarian calculations are impossibly difficult to perform, whereas analysing a situation in terms of human rights is often feasible, it may be worth using a 'human rights' analysis in preference to any specific theory of what the happiness implications of a particular action are. If all this were true, it could be that the concept of 'human rights' is not expressible, even in principle, in terms of 'happiness' - that it is not a utilitarian concept at all. We may call it a moral concept. |

Within hours, one father was in school threatening the headteacher with (a) violence and (b) a trip to the European Court of human rights if he didn't reinstate his daughter's right to eat junk.
But schools in poorer areas of the USA and UK, where healthy eating campaigns have been successful, report considerable improvements in children's behaviour. It seems the best way to make a real change in the eating habits of under-privileged children would be for the government or individual schools to be heavy-handed about school meals. |
| After all, in an egalitarian society, everyone has the same human rights as everyone else, so why shouldn't that apply to children too? If everyone's entitled to self-realisation, why should children be expected to defer to others just because of their age? Why should they give up their seat, hold their tongue, restrain their play so as not to offend some adult stranger? |
| In the rest of the world, anti-censorship campaigners cite human rights legislation. The issue of children's right to a healthy environment is thus lost in controversy about the rights of adults to read, view and listen to whatever they like.

If the explanation seems good, it might be worth adopting such a theory. If we are going to protect our country against bioterrorism, our government must become more actively involved in international policies to promote health and food security as human rights for everyone, everywhere.
What can we, as individuals, do to promote such actions? We can join consumer organizations that work for environmental protection, food assistance, public health, and human rights—all of which support food safety as a necessary component of food security. |

However, as well as the difficulties of policing, there's the same old problem of extreme interpretations of human rights legislation and, in the USA, the First Amendment. Defenders of freedom of speech on the Internet are even more voluble than critics of media censorship, so there's a long way to go in finding a sensible balanced approach. There's also enormous reluctance among the vast majority of decent people to become involved in this debate. |

I hold the vision that we can join the forces of nonviolence, sustainability, human rights and greater knowledge to forge a new world. We need to find ways besides competition and profit to do our work. And we who want to heal ourselves from our denials and guilt have an opportunity as never before to step outside the System and re-inherit the Earth.
The divergence between spiritual reality and imperiled world has never been greater. The opportunity to transcend this dilemma has never been greater. |

Imagine building a Web portal, collecting recordings and evidence of what's happening to the planet, and putting news and data at all kinds of people's fingertips, from researchers and activists to business and political figures. It would highlight the changes to the planet, and would give voice to people who are willing to work to see a new world, a better world, take shape. It would give everyday citizens a chance to play a role in the protection of the planet. |
