The one thing you can't do with hemp is get high from smoking it. The THC content is so low in industrial hemp that you'd have to smoke a hundred pounds of hemp just to feel anything resembling a buzz. Introduction by Ed Rosenthal
Hemp has been an economic crop worldwide for thousands of years. At the beginning of 1990 its long history seemed to be coming to an end. Production was at its nadir. The traditional customers and users stopped purchasing and the hemp industry was mired in regulation. | | The importation, sterilization and commercial distribution of hemp seeds is regulated by the Drug Enforcement Administration pursuant to the Controlled Substances Import and Export Act, U.S.C. 952 Et. Seq. and 21 C.F.R. 1311. In calendar year 1990 approximately 60 tons of seeds were imported into this country, mostly for use as birdseed.
The seeds themselves contain almost no Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most psychoactive principal in marijuana. THC is concentrated in the female flower top and leaves. | | Sterile hemp seeds are specifically excluded from the definition of "marijuana" and are not controlled substances under federal law. Public Law 91-513, Section 102(15). The term "marihuana" is defined as:

If hemp was eliminated from a site, the seeds had to be re-introduced before hemp could become established again. Further, seeds had to germinate early and grow rapidly in order to colonize a site. Almost all of the sites where hemp was found growing had been repeatedly disturbed by cultivation, mowing, waste disposal, and/or stream channeling. They reported permanent establishment of hemp required disturbing the soil in a particular site at least once every 4 to 5 years (Haney and Kutscheid, 1975). | Rowan Robinson See book keywords and concepts | | A four-day conference attended by scientists and industrialists from around the world discussed breeding, harvesting, and storage techniques; processing, retting, and finishing for paper pulp and fiber; hemp seeds for human nutrition, cosmetics, and detergents; building materials, fuel, and medical applications; and legal issues.
