Avastin and colon cancer
In Israel, colon cancer patients participated in a hunger strike, pleading for government agencies to pay for newest colon cancer drug, Avastin. A woman in Great Britain gained public attention in the news media for her fight to get health authorities to pay for Avastin to treat her otherwise hopeless case of colon cancer. A woman in India sold her home to pay for Avastin.
With other treatments for colon cancer so ineffective, the newest promoted drug is all that many colon cancer patients can hang their hopes upon. Avastin is that drug. |

Surgery is especially prone to placebo effects, since controlled studies are not required by government agencies"7 A treatment for angina pectoris that was later found ineffective reported improvement in 82% of all patients.8 Thus, ironically, we have labeled a treatment as useless, though it helped more than four of five patients!
Definition. These findings, which seem to fly in the face of the medical model, are not easily explained. Nor is the term "placebo," easily defined. |

The research is sponsored by government agencies such as National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and huge pharmaceutical companies such as Glaxo, Pfizer, Squibb and Genentech. One of the studies, "The Effect of Anti-HIV Treatment on Body Characteristics of HIV-infected Children" seeks to identify the causes of "Wasting and Lipodystrophy [fat redistribution]" by using drugs known to cause wasting and lipodystrophy. |

According to a meticulous and recent analysis of data from a spectrum of U.S. government agencies, when all other factors are included, the number rises to 783,966, making doctors, hospitals, and drugs the leading cause of death in America. Each year, this costs society an estimated $282 billion. About twice the number of Americans die due to infections acquired in hospitals each year as the number who die in traffic accidents. And each year, more than twice as many Americans die from the negative effects of prescription drugs as those who died in the Vietnam war. |

Clearly, the mainstream medical and political establishment has a long way to go in recognizing and addressing the serious problem of chemical toxicity. "The government agencies and the higher-ups in the medical political structure are not even half-aware of the complexity of these environmental toxins and their effect on our health," says Dr. Richard Kunin. "They see it as very rare and therefore don't include [it] as part of a routine medical checkup. |

You'll find information on these labs, plus other resources including government agencies and health care facilities in the Resource Directory.) Why can't you ask your family doctor for help? Unfortunately, your own physician is limited in the kinds of tests he can perform on you. Customary blood and urine tests will not necessarily detect a given toxin that's doing damage to you but remains "invisible." Many of today's toxic chemicals can hide under the radar of standard medical testing. |
| Also keep in mind that much of what we know about body burdens of contaminants comes from limited studies of a few contaminants, many of which are conducted by government agencies on selected groups of people. While these studies offer population-wide averages, they obviously cannot predict body burdens for individual people—and they cannot cover the gamut of all possible contaminants to which we are regularly exposed. |

At both the population and individual levels, success in dietary and lifestyle intervention relies on multiple levels of support ranging from clinicians to government agencies to private institutes and industries. In particular, partnering with industry to improve the nutritional quality of the food supply, such as reducing sodium and fat content of processed foods, and promoting foods and nutrients consistent with the DASH dietary pattern will play a critical role in implementing dietary and lifestyle modifications. |

Individuals, as well as health and government agencies, have begun to acknowledge this alarming reality and take steps to change it.
In its June 2006 report, titled "Preventing Disease Through Healthy Environments," the WHO focused on the environmental causes of disease and how numerous diseases are influenced by environmental factors. |

Federal government agencies have developed three types of guidance to help consumers make healthy food and nutrient choices. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) have jointly issued the Dietary Guidelines for Americans every 5 years since 1980. The guidelines for 2005 were the most recent release [11, 12]. To help apply the new guidelines, MyPyramid was developed as a tool to be used in nutrition education efforts, and it can be particularly useful in helping the public make healthy food choices [13]. |

This market presents a significant opportunity for an increasing number of fleet operators now seeking freeway-capable, zero-emission, all-electric vehicles. Some government agencies currently use plug-in hybrids.
The car company is planning to follow up the truck model next year with a sport-utility vehicle (SUV) that can go 250 miles on a single charge. The price to consumers will remain about the same. The cost to the environment, however, represents a substantial improvement over any vehicle using a combustion engine. |

With their hoards of cash, the companies have readily handed money to patient groups, hospitals, universities, medical schools, physician societies, government agencies, and just about any organization they want on their side. Harvard, for one, has a lecture hall named for Pfizer in a building named for Mallinckrodt, another company.
The industry's cash-filled coffers have given it a stranglehold on medical science. Most of the nation's best academic medical minds have at some time been on the industry's payroll as consultants. |

Only two products tested by the NRDC -- Febreze Air Effects and Renuzit Subtle Effects -- contained virtually no detectable levels of phthalates, yet the twelve other products tested positive for the chemical even though some were labeled "unscented" and none of them listed phthalates as an ingredient. Some products were even labeled "All natural!" (Which just goes to demonstrate, yet again, that the "All natural" claim is meaningless. |

An important part of Lyme's forest-land investment strategy is to seek out properties with high conservation values, often in partnership with nonprofit conservation organizations or government agencies. Lyme's goal, when purchasing land, is not to simply purchase potentially profitable land for logging, but to invest in forest-land tracts with compelling qualities and values not fully recognized by others.
Lyme Timer follows the nine principles of sustainability set out by the Northern Forest Lands Council, including:*^

Do-it-yourselfers and building professionals also find their products at home centers, building material dealers, and lumberyards. If you see the BlueLinx label on your wood products, stay away from them. Instead, ask for wood that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). You can easily find economically viable alternatives to BlueLinx's rain forest woods. |

| Ten percent seems an inconsequential amount; but consider that monies from the NIH — public, taxpayer monies — supporting the same research, was tainted by the influence corporations exert on government agencies. How unbiased will the research results actually be? Lines separating government and academia from corporate influence have become so smudged that virtually all research results become suspect. |
| Researching medical cures in the literature shows hundreds of references to herbs, supplements, and other forms of alternative healing that are prohibited in this country by the FDA, AMA, USD A, and other government agencies. Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling suggested that all diets should be supplemented with Vitamin C. When many Americans followed this advice, there was a dramatic, corresponding drop in the rate of heart disease. Coincidence? Authorities representing the Establishment discounted the correlation and characterized Pauling as a quack. |
| Bills passed during both the Clinton and Bush administrations allow health care providers, including government agencies, to sell patient health care information. Now, Health and Human Services agencies can feed Big Pharma's appetite for "live bait."
• As far back as the Reagan-Bush administration, the Justice Department fined Lilly $25,000 ($1,000 for each of 25 separate counts) for lying and mislabeling side effects related to Prozac. |
| Accordingly, these changes should be expedited:
• government agencies should not be excluded from liability.
• Research results that were obtained by federal funding must be fully disclosed (other than those involving national security).
• Government employees, including elected officials, must provide full disclosure of any ties to private corporations, including any financial holdings in such corporations. (No investments in private corporations while in off ice... NONE.)
• Laws allowing direct to consumer advertising of prescription medication should be repealed. |

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is and has been the advocacy group most closely associated with diabetes and most trusted by government agencies, the medical profession, and diabetics. (Other chronic diseases are represented/advocated by other organizations.)

U.S. government agencies and world traveler who "went soybean one hundred percent" after a trip to China21—the biggest problem was the tendency of soy flour to go rancid.22 However, new processing methods were coming on the market and producing soy flours that could be kept for longer periods without turning rancid.23 (See Chapter 7. |

The story of soy sheds light on the dirty little secrets of the modern food processing industry, the power of public relations, the corruption of scientific inquiry and the collusion of FDA and other government agencies that are mandated to protect us.
In the first half of the 20th century, John Harvey Kellogg, Henry Ford and others envisioned a grand future for soy. |
| Born in Russia in 1886, this mystery man traveled throughout the world and worked for the United States Bureau of Mines and other government agencies. In his 1931 manifesto "Soya Flour as a National Food," Horvath insisted that soy deserved a place of honor on the American table, claiming that soy eaters would gain both physical stamina and "mental virility." He reasoned that it must have been soy that allowed the Chinese to attain a high level of culture at a time in history when Americans and Europeans were barbarians.89
Henry Ford also had grand plans for soy. |

The drug will not be released for general patient use unless government agencies are convinced that the drugs are effective and relatively safe. These studies are conducted by feeding the drugs to a variety of animals for a long enough period of time to receive clear results. Since animals used in the laboratory are short lived, they are on the drugs for a substantial proportion of their life span. The animals are examined for any pathological changes in their organs, for the effect the drugs have on growth rate and their ability to reproduce, and, of course, for their LD^0. |

The negative bias of some government agencies, particularly the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), against natural medicine has also likely inhibited many doctors from taking a closer look at the natural approach. Another factor might be what psychologists call "cognitive dissonance:" Many doctors have a hard time considering the possibility that a simple and safe alternative exists, after they spent years learning to become experts at administering toxic drugs. |

That law forces government agencies to release information which the drug companies do not want the public to know about. In 2002 a Freedom of Information Act request led to the discovery that the drug companies (who must submit all their drug studies to the FDA) had been sharing only their "successes" with the public in their antidepressant advertising.11 That is no more fair than a major league baseball player not having to count strikeouts in calculating his batting average. |

For example, most companies, government agencies, and schools computerized their phone systems, eliminating numbers of live human beings answering the phones. The net result was that it became nearly impossible to make contact with a live person at any company or institution in America. The public now had to waste astronomical amounts of time wading through tedious recorded phone menus or listening to Muzak while placed automatically on "hold," often getting disconnected, or ending up in voice-mail limbo. Communication was hampered by computerization, not facilitated by it. |

Pyramid Power
The old and recently retired food pyramid, backed by government agencies, public-health officials, and dieticians was guaranteed to make you fat and unhealthy. My favorite phrase for many years was, "if you eat like a pyramid you will look like one." This old pyramid was a testament to the lobbying skills of vested-interest powers, with lip-service input from dietary experts.
From the point of view of avoiding gaining weight in an out-of-control slide headed for diabetes like a runaway freight train, the new pyramid is better than the old. |
