In his early 60s, frank retired after 34 years working as an executive with the same company. For most people, this is the time when health starts to decline, but not for frank. He started hitting the health club with Carol three times a week and has not stopped working out since. He is now 70 years old. After 40 years of marriage, the death of a spouse is devastating and statistics for older married couples give the remaining spouse a short lifespan. The reason for this is that most remaining spouses feel lost and give up on life. |

Another came a year later, when well-known NBC journalist Betty Rollin published a frank memoir of her own experiences with breast cancer, First, You Cry (later made into a television movie starring Mary Tyler Moore).
As the popular discourse about the emotional trauma of receiving a diagnosis of cancer became increasingly frank, the culture of care within oncology itself also began to change. A 1961 survey of physicians in a particular region of the United States found that more than 90 percent of them usually did not reveal a cancer diagnosis to the patient. |
| In his 1995 book The Wounded Storyteller, sociologist Arthur frank talks eloquently about this need. "Stories," he reminds us, "repair the damage that illness has done to the ill person's sense of where she is in life and where she may be going."3 At the same time, frank goes on, many people no longer feel able to draw comfort or meaning from the traditional sources for such stories—family histories, folk beliefs, religious traditions—because such traditional sources no longer have credibility in the modern world.
This may be true, but is there anything more to say? |

In the course of that initial consultation, be completely frank with your prospective partner. Describe all aspects of your life that might be relevant to your health concern. Make your expectations explicit. Ask the practitioner for a frank assessment of your future prospects with them. If anything the person says doesn't sound right, let them know, and take note of how they handle the interaction. Are they able to accept feedback? |

Frank, the connection between heart dis- %-ease and diabetes and the diagonal ear crease— EARLOBE CREASE or frank sign, as it's sometimes called—has come into question. However, some recent studies seem to confirm his observations.

People with misshapen ears are often born that way. And while they may be merely a cosmetic concern, deformed ears can sometimes be a sign of an inherited disease or congenital (present at birth) disorder. |

Frank was using nutritional yeast and RNA derived from yeast, which has been in health food stores for years.
Dr. frank found that when he had patients consume a combination of sardines and fish that were high in RNA, along with B complex vitamins and RNA from yeast, he could take almost anyone who was over 50 and in three or four weeks have them looking 10 or 15 years younger. These people would start feeling energetic, and have greater endurance and aerobic capacity.
Our ideas about RNA developed over time. First, we were eating and experimenting with sardines. Then we discovered Dr. |

At the end of three months, Frank's Hb A was 7.9 percent, he had lost 22 pounds, and his fasting glucose averaged 125 mg/dL. At that point, frank started using the modified Tabata exercise approach two days a week, using a stationary exercise bike he had in his basement. He also added 1,000 mg daily of L-carnitine to reduce blood glucose levels further and for heart health. He admitted that following the antiglycation eating program was "a bit difficult, especially since I really love fried foods," but that his wife was "holding me to it. |

However, the agency does fulfill the role of reassuring consumers, according to a focus group commissioned by the cosmetics industry and conducted by Republican messaging guru frank Luntz. Best known for his polling to develop the language for the 1994 Republican "Contract with America" and his work to reframe the estate tax as the "death tax," frank Luntz conducted focus groups for both the cosmetics and chemical industries in 2006, using his famous "dial technology" to gauge the emotional reactions of focus group participants.

FRANK'S STORY
Early in 2006, frank, a fifty-seven-year-old retired police officer who now runs a security company out of his home, noticed that he was feeling very tired. He also found that he was thirsty much of the time for no apparent reason, that his vision was frequently blurry, and that his fingers would often become numb.
The combination of symptoms concerned him, so he made an appointment with his family doctor. His physical examination and blood profile showed a clear picture of diabetes:
?Fasting glucose, 185 mg/dL
?Blood pressure, 150/80 mm Hg
?Hemoglobin A , 13.2 percent

He is now in phenomenal shape and has more motivation and desire than most people I know who are in their 20s and 30s. Like frank, anyone at anytime can make the decision to improve their life, even in the face of personal tragedy.

Encouraged by what he thought was du Pont's open and frank attitude, in 1932 Hueper sent him a letter. German researchers, he wrote, had found that men manufacturing some synthetic dyes, just like those being made at DuPont's Delaware facilities, often developed blood in their urine and blockages in their bladders—early signs of tumors. Hueper candidly warned that the DuPont Company could expect to see many cases of bladder cancer in the workers at its dye plants in Delaware.
At first the letter got no response. |

This author has not read such a compassionate and frank discussion as Earle's anywhere else. This is what he said (abbreviated version):
'Doc, what would you do?' We do not usually offer our advice to patients facing treatment decisions for a terminal diagnosis in the form of 'If I were you, I'd do this...'
We are concerned that we cannot be objective when imagining scenarios that involve our loved ones or ourselves. However, it is a reasonable question from the patient's perspective, as in knowing the stocks your broker is buying, or on which house your real estate agent would put an offer. |

RECENT REPORTS on experiments with mice have given wide publicity to a theory that cigarette smoking is in some way linked with lung cancer in human beings.

A comprehensive review paper on the relationship of fats to coronary heart disease by frank Hu, JoAnn Manson, and Walter Willett from Harvard—the folks who ran the Nurses' Health Study—points out that omega-6s do lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol and also improve insulin sensitivity. As for the omega-3s, hundreds of studies have shown that they lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels. The omega-3 fatty acids in hemp are effective in decreasing blood pressure, platelet stickiness, and in fibrinogen levels, a key marker in atherosclerosis. |
| If I may be frank, one of the difficulties in picking foods and beverages for this book had to do with the following dilemma: When does the source of a beverage (for example, apples) get its "own" entry, when does the juke made from the source (e.g., apple juice) get its "own" entry, and when do both get their own entry. (Similar dilemmas existed for oils—e.g., olives vs. olive oil—and nuts—e.g., peanuts vs. peanut butter.) Here's how I tried to solve the problem. |

But even that team, gently conservative in their phrasing, point out that "the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 (fats) is less than optimal and should be improved." The argument is over whether to improve that ratio by increasing omega-3s, reducing omega-6s, or both. Personally, I think it's both. |

Frank Rauscher succeeded Endi-cott as chief of the NCI in 1971 and apparently found Gori an impressive manager of a program that someone needed to carry out.

In retrospect it seems clear that frank Press was correct about many things. It's not enough to write the right book. The world has to be ready to listen. I'm certainly not the first person to try to shine light on the lopsided nature of the effort against cancer, nor am I unique in commenting on the arrogance of environmental policies. But there are signs that the world may be more ready to listen.
The modern critique of our failure to ferret out and act on preventable causes of cancer goes back more than four decades, to Murray Bookchin and Rachel Carson. |
| The "Frank Statement" stated that the claims of a hazard had been abandoned "one by one" when, in fact, evidence for hazards had grown steadily stronger over time. The Statement said that the statistics used in the classic epidemiological studies "could apply with equal force to any one of the many other aspects of modern life," when the most influential studies had been carefully designed to exclude such possibilities. |

This may be true, but is there anything more to say? Here I come finally to my point. In fact, there is a third way of thinking about physical illness—and of telling stories about physical illness—that is neither the traditional way that has lost credibility, nor the standard physicalist way that lacks existential relevance. |
| And in 1950, this approach had a kind of milestone moment in terms of its penetration into the wider culture: it became the basis of a hit number, "Adelaide's Lament," in frank Loesser's Broadway musical Guys and Dolls. Adelaide is a cabaret dancer of a certain age who has been unable, after thirteen years, to persuade her ne'er-do-well gambler fiance to marry her. She also suffers from chronic respiratory problems, for which she seeks medical help. Her doctor suspects a psychosomatic cause, and lends her a textbook (Alexander's, perhaps?) to help her better understand her own case. |

We had Olympic gold medalist frank Shorter competing against the world's best runners in his hometown marathon; we had Bill Rogers telling everyone to get out there; and we had a new phenomenon called the "endorphin rush."
A postdoctoral neuroscientist from Johns Hopkins University named Candace Pert had recently discovered that there were opiate receptors in the brain, meaning the body had a built-in way of killing pain with molecules that worked like morphine. Endorphins, as they became known, dulled pain in the body and produced euphoria in the mind. |

Taking a page out of the Laskers' book on public relations, the tobacco companies issued what was published in many newspapers as the "Frank Statement." On January 4, 1954, an impressive and official looking full-page advertisement appeared in the NewYork Times and other major newspapers around the country. In it, the industry attempted to minimize reports that smoking caused lung cancer in humans by invoking evidence from other scientists, and promised that it would directly address concerns about cigarettes. |
