Preparation of Body Fluids
For the isolation of flavonoids and their derivatives from liquid samples like beverages (wine or fruit juice) and physiological fluids (blood or urine), two different approaches are usually applied. The first one is based on liquid-liquid extraction and the second one on solid-phase extraction of target natural products mainly on RP C-18 silica gel cartridges. In the case of body fluids, special procedures have to be considered to avoid degradation of target compounds due to the activity of different enzymes present (Martinez-Ortega et al, 2004). |

Still, respiratory tract infections or exposure to airborne pollutants can overwhelm these local antibacteria, antiviral, and antioxidant systems found in the epithelial lining fluids (ELFs). When this happens, a tremendous inflammatory-immune response occurs. The fluids in the lining of the lungs become very thick as the immune response attracts in many white cells that literally attack the invading organisms or pollutants.
As you have learned already, our immune response can cause an exaggerated amount of inflammation. If the invaders are quickly cleared out, everything settles down. |

The flows of cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and other body fluids are mostly nonlinear, which moves them into the realm of chaos theory, systems theory, and even quantum physics, areas that are not usually applied to biology. What's more, the body spaces within which these fluids move alter and augment the frequencies of the sounds, which has an important effect on any information content encoded by those sound waves. |

In the late 1950s, Dave Fultz at the University of Chicago built a mock-up of the earth's atmosphere using rotating fluids that simulated the behavior of atmospheric gases. Sure enough, the fluids moved in stable, repeating patterns—unless, that is, they were disturbed. Then, even the smallest interference could produce massive changes in the currents. It wasn't proof by a long shot, but it certainly was a powerful suggestion that the real atmosphere was susceptible to significant change. Other scientists developed mathematical models that indicated similar possibilities for rapid shifts. |

The phosphoric acid condition seems to result from loss of bodily fluids, particularly sexual bodily fluids," Dr. Korins says. "If you've had a very promiscuous period, feel drained sexually and are chronically tired and fatigued, phosphoric acid can be particularly helpful. People who respond to this remedy are usually mentally apathetic and indifferent, and have tearing pains in their joints, as if the bones were scraped. They are better with short naps. There is a craving for sodas and carbonated drinks. Phosphoric acid is also a major remedy in diabetes. |

Percival and his colleagues in the eighteenth century have almost all been replaced by synthetic, water-based fluids that recycle almost indefinitely in almost any modern factory with moving parts. The natural lubricants had carried at least some inherent antimicrobial power, but the synthetic cooling fluids are wholly dependent on powerful antibiotics and sterilizing agents to keep them from becoming completely overgrown with bacteria. Unfortunately, these additives are often insufficient to the task or may even select for obscure microbes. |

Why do fluids matter so much? Over the years our pattern of fluid consumption has shifted. Today, too many of us are drinking fluids that are high in calories like sodas and juices. Indeed, research has shown that adults today are drinking about 20 ounces more caloric beverages a day14. In fact, caloric beverages now make up 21 percent15 of our total calorie intake and sodas and fruit drinks alone account for 43 percent16 of our total added sugars in the diet (18 of those 42 teaspoons of sugar we eat daily!). That adds up to a tremendous number of calories in a year. |

Caffeine acts as a diuretic and causes fluid loss, so caffeinated beverages cannot be counted as fluids.
Action Plan for Drinking More Fluids
Keep track of the fluids you drink for the next three days. Remember: any liquids that are not caffeinated can be counted as proper fluids. Are you meeting the goals given above? If not, think of ways to include more fluids. Some ideas to help with this include the following:
?Drink herbal teas.
?Drink a full glass of water any time that you brush your teeth, take any vitamins or medication, and eat a meal or snack.

Drinking an inadequate amount of fluids is one of the biggest iw^^lJl contributors to constipation. A whole food diet consisting of whole yjmi^ grains and fresh fruit and vegetables will provide enough fiber to keep your bowels moving. Other good foods high in fiber are beans, nuts, prunes, and figs. Flaxseeds are highly concentrated in fiber and contain essential fatty acids that are thought to coat your intestines, promoting smooth bowel movements. Do not cook with flaxseeds or subject them to heat; instead, sprinkle 2 tbsp on cereals or

The rate at which energy is used by a person at rest for maintaining basic body processes, such as breathing and the circulation of fluids.
Bile. A bitter-tasting fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder before being released into the small intestine to assist in the digestion of fats.
Blood pressure. The forces placed on the blood vessels by the flow of blood.
Bone marrow. The soft material that fills the inside of bone cavities and produces blood cells.
Bowel. The small or large intestine.
Caffeine. An organic chemical present in tea. |

| Consuming an inadequate amount of fluids, particularly if it's hot outside or you're exercising, can deplete energy and lead to weakness, dizziness and headaches. Drink at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily. On days that you exert yourself to the point of perspiring, drink up to 13 glasses.
•Watch what you drink. Drink no more than one caffeinated beverage a day. Coffee, tea, cola and other caffeinated beverages provide a temporary energy boost, but energy levels plunge when the stimulant's effects wear off. |

Steeped in scholasticism by his medical education, he was also stimulated by the new scientific styles and knowledge emerging around him—in particular by the new 'fluids' or substances that were regularly reported in the burgeoning scientific press: electricity, phlogiston, caloric, magnetism, and others. He claimed to have discovered a genuine natural substance, which he called 'animal magnetism'. It was a 'subtle fluid' in both the classical and the Newtonian senses—Mesmer himself likened it to gravity and aether as well as the newly discovered 'galvanic fluid', electricity. |
| In Indian and Chinese medicine too, fluids imbued with unique properties and actions and capable of affecting the physical and mental state of the body mediated the relationship between the organs, the body, and the social and natural environments.
However, the broad parallels between these three 'scholarly' (in other words, learned, text-based, and systematically transmitted) medical traditions should not obscure the ways in which they differ from each other and from modern biomedicine. Differences? |
| In late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe, the pulse was increasingly regarded as a merely two-dimensional indicator of bodily health; the western body-model placed far less emphasis on a complex circulation of subtle fluids than its Ayurvedic and Chinese counterparts so only quantifiable elements of the pulse—force and frequency—were significant. |
| But the dosas differ from the humours in that they are not just physical fluids. Simultaneously, they represent the active elements—air (paired with space), fire (paired with water), and water (paired with earth)—in Ayurveda's alchemical body-model, and thus are linked to the attributes and affinities of those elements. One further association unites their alchemical and hydraulic roles: they are the less stable, more impure forms of the vital essences, agni, prana, and ojas—understood as the forms in which the elements of air, fire and water exist in living beings. |

General recommendations: Make sure the child drinks plenty of fluids to remain hydrated. Decongestants may be used to encourage the mucus to drain through the eustachian tube. Avoid any substance that may be contributing to the inflammation, such as smoke or specific individual allergens. Feeding babies in an upright position is another prophylactic therapy.
Antibiotics: If the infection does not resolve itself within two to three days amoxicillin is prescribed. |

The sweet flavor nourishes yin, or the fluids of the body, which helps to build up a person who is dry, has a weak immune system, and is frail. People who are dry, cold, and spacey can benefit from good-quality sweet foods, such as fruits, whole grains, and sweet herbs such as anise, fennel, licorice, and stevia.

Myth 4: Aspirin is the best medicine for a fever. The most common antipyretics—fever reducers—are available over-the-counter. They include acetaminophen (Tylenol) and aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve). |

Also, limit your alcohol consumption to no more than one drink per day—any more can lead to fatigue.
•Practice the "relaxation response." This technique, developed by Herbert Benson, MD, of Harvard University, has been shown to reduce blood pressure and heart rate. For me, doing this for just five minutes in the middle of the day is rejuvenating.
How to do it: Sit in a chair in a quiet room. Close your eyes. |
| Avoid excess fluids at mealtime. This keeps the stomach sufficiently acidic and aids digestion and elimination. Drink water when you are thirsty.
•Take the dietary fiber glucomannan— one 665-mg capsule twice daily—with a large glass of water 30 minutes before a meal.
•Do not use herbal laxatives, such as those containing senna or cascara. They can cause spasms and discolor the lining of the colon. Also avoid beets, nuts, seeds and strong teas and coffee.
