He asked Franklin to describe a situation in which he had been forced to "bend the rules."
Franklin remembered how he was taken aback by the question. It was not a question that one found in any of the books offering advice on how to get a job. Yet he hid his surprise from Valentino and quickly came up with a story from graduate school. As an instructor, he told Valentino, he had once had to deal with a student who had found a way of "bending the rules" in an attempt to get a better grade.
The story was not what Valentino was looking for. He had not been impressed. |

• Carb and protein intake. Many athletes and weekend warriors believe that carbohydrate loading increases the amount of sugar (glycogen) stored in your liver, but carb loading can actually play havoc with blood sugar and insulin levels, making you feel more tired than energized, according to Loren Cordain, Ph.D., of Colorado State University, Fort Collins. Cordain, the author of The Paleo Diet, warns against carb loading. |

JOINTS
DOUBLE-JOINTEDNESS
Have you ever seen people bend their fingers all the way back or even twist their whole bodies like a human pretzel? They may be displaying the classic signs of hypermohility syndrome, aka hyperflexibility or double-jointedness. People with this condition don't really have a double set of joints; rather the ligaments and muscles around their joints are superflex-ible, resulting in the ability to bend and stretch like a contortionist. This is generally a benign condition that usually becomes evident in childhood and tends to run in families. |

Hippie Stretch: With your feet together and flat on the ground, slowly bend forward at your waist. Alternate bending one knee and keeping the other leg straight (while still keeping your feet flat). Let your relaxed head hang down, releasing all your tension. Stretch each side for fifteen seconds. To maximize stretch, really drop the hip on the side of the bent knee. Butterfly: Sit on the ground with your back straight and your legs bent so that the bottoms of your feet touch each other in front of you. Let your knees drop toward the floor to stretch the inner parts of your thighs. |

Imprints bend Us Physiologically
Our emotions affect our system far sooner than our thinking processes. It's on the right side that we cope with stress early on, and this may determine how the whole system will react. The prototype "bends" our physiologic processes globally. It is the network of right limbic/ brainstem cells that affects hormone secretion and other physiologic processes; this is where our feelings are directly translated to our biochemistry. |

With the elbow flexed, the Qu Chi point is located in the outside depression at the elbow's bend (the lateral end of the traverse cubital crease). The Feng Chi point is located at the base of the skull, 2 inches left of the center point. The Xue Hai point is found on the inside of the leg at the depression just above the knee.
Diet: In general, eating fresh vegetables and fruit is recommended. During the acute stage, the patient should avoid seafood and spicy food.
NATUROPATHY
Diet: Urticaria can be caused by toxins that are excreted through the skin. |

| The child may instinctively have to bend slightly backwards during a coughing spasm in order to raise mucus from the chest. Other symptoms include breathlessness before a coughing spasm, and vomiting afterwards. The patient feels generally worse for getting angry (which can trigger coughing bouts), and better after vomiting.
O o o o
Carbo veg: Consider using this remedy if a coughing spasm leads to the child becoming pale, clammy, exhausted, and prostrated. There is a craving for cold air, o and a need to be fanned in order to get more comfortable. |
| Movement (especially moving the arms) aggravates pain and discomfort, and can be eased by sitting in a position that allows the body to bend forward.
TIP: USE HYPERICUM
A soothing infusion of diluted Hypericum tincture can be applied to a cool compress in order to ease pain. Follow this with an application of Hypericum cream for added benefit.
HERBALISM
Chili pepper: Recent research has propelled the chili pepper and its primary active ingredient, capsaicin, into the spotlight. Capsaicin has been shown to be useful for many types of aches and pains, including those associated with shingles. |

If women have What to Expect When You're Expecting, men ought to have What to Expect When You're Asked to Drop Your Drawers, Turn Around, and bend Over. When docs are looking to assess your prostate health, they'll start with a rectal exam to see if they can feel any inflammation or abnormal growths. They may also use an ultrasound, as well as biopsies to diagnose inflammation and /or cancer. Urologists may also do tests that measure such things as urinary flow rates and other urinary symptoms associated with prostate conditions. |

Then the leaves of the tree began murmuring, and a fine, milk-white rain descended from them upon the White Youth. A warm breath of wind could be felt. The tree began to groan, and out of age, with earnest regard, hair flowing free, and bosom bare. The goddess offered her milk to the youth from a sumptuous breast, and after partaking of it he felt his strength increase a hundredfold. At: the same time the goddess promised the youth every happiness and blessed him in such a way that neither water, nor fire, iron, nor anything else should ever do him harm. |
| The notion of a cosmic law, which all existence serves and to which man himself must bend, has long since passed through the preliminary mystical stages represented in the old astrology, and is now simply accepted in mechanical terms as a master of course. The descent of the Occidental sciences from the heavens to the earth (from seventeenth-century astronomy to nineteenth-century biology), and their concentration today, at last, on man himself (in twentieth-century anthropology and psychology), mark the path of a prodigious transfer of the focal point of human wonder. |

When you're going down, lean into the direction where you're falling (don't fight it), and bend your knees to lower the center of gravity. Pon't stick out your arm or wrist to break the fall.
þ Aim your landing so that your shoulder and upper back are the first to hit the ground.
þ Roll over (as in a somersault or forward roll) so that the impact is absorbed over a larger area of your body rather than just an acute break point at the location of impact.

Vacuum, or empty space, has energy and tension, it can bend and warp, so it is unquestionably something.5 As Alan Guth wrote, "In this context, a proposal that the universe was created from empty space is no more fundamental than a proposal that the universe was spawned by a piece of rubber. It might be true, but one would still want to ask where the piece of rubber came from."6
The picture of quantum tunneling from nothing has none of these problems. The universe is tiny right after tunneling, but it is filled with a false vacuum and immediately starts to inflate. |

Tears welled in the squinting crinkled eyes of Maydala Mandelbaum, a woman well into her seventies who stood quietly, with legs planted at the monument like small trees that can bend but not break. She turned to me and to anyone else within her sight. "Sixty years ago, I lost everyone, when I was just a girl. My whole family was gone. No one survived. But I am here to remember them."
Some folks who had come to make the customary visit before the New Year to their deceased family members' gravesites began to leave. Golf games and workouts were waiting. |
| In the well-maintained Gemilas Chesed cemetery just up Ripple Road around a small bend off Pennsylvania Route 48, the Holocaust monument is just a bit larger than the typical tombstone. A large, mostly blank white marble slab on which a few names are inscribed sits in the midst of the cemetery, right behind the tombstones of my mother and father, giving their graves a central focus that they both would love.
For years, I had seen this mostly empty stone but never really looked at it. It loomed as something vaguely somnolent, unbidden, uninteresting but unavoidable. |

The cornea and the lens behind it bend the light that's coming through to focus on the retina. The retina acts like the film in a camera. Two kinds of retinal cells in the back of your eye connect to neurons in your brain that let you interpret what you think you saw. These two types of brain cells in the retina are rods (which respond to black and white) and cones (which respond to color). Information from the retina travels along the optic nerve so it can be processed by your brain.
