Researchers have shown that adding a dietary regimen of fish oil, to those taking COX-2 inhibitor anti-inflammatory drugs, synergistically reduces colon cancer in animals. [Cancer Research 65: 8022-27, 2005]
A patient is often prescribed an anti-inflammatory drug after having a non-cancerous polyp removed, meaning the drug will pose a greater threat to life than will the polyp.
Aspirin and colon cancer
Aspirin, like the COX-2 inhibitor drugs, is often recommended for prevention of recurring polyps. |

They include overeating, consuming fried foods, excessive alcohol consumption, heavy cigarette smoking, drinking coffee every day, ingesting soda, eating large quantities of animal protein and animal fats, and subjecting oneself to x-ray radiation, cytotoxic drugs, aspirin, and other anti-inflammatory drugs. Food poisoning, highly spiced foods, iced beverages, dehydration, and emotional stress also cause gastric distress. All of these also cause gallstones in the liver and gallbladder, thereby starting off a vicious cycle and creating major disruptions throughout the GI tract. |

As of this writing, Bextra (valdecoxib) is on the ropes, too, and question marks hang over the entire class of COX-2 inhibitors, part of the family of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). What are people in pain supposed to do?
A GROWING PROBLEM
The anti-inflammatory drugs were introduced into the marketplace for a good reason: increased inflammation. Arthritis—both rheumatoid and osteoarthritishas, of course, been around for a long time, as have the other disorders associated with chronic inflammation. (See the inset at right. |

It's also one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory drugs ever found. During my recent trip to Ogliastra, I spoke to a guy who told me that sheep do not eat this kind of plant, while goats do. Therefore one may ask whether goat's milk in this region is richer in arzanol, thus acquiring anti-inflammatory properties."
The region's unique geographic properties certainly provide a piece of the puzzle too. |

Like Boswellia, ginger acts as a natural NSAID, with a broader enzyme-blocking action than anti-inflammatory drugs. Ginger also contains many antioxidant compounds. "In vitro" (test-tube) research and "in vivo" studies (using animals and people) find that consuming ginger most often successfully reduces inflammation and pain.
Dose: Consume ginger as part of your diet and supplement with up to 4 grams per day of powdered ginger.

The reason is because most of these contain acetylsalicylic acid or similar anti-inflammatory drugs. And while these drugs may give some temporary relief from pain or stuffiness, they also lower the body's fever below ioo°f (37.8°c), thereby allowing the virus to multiply unchallenged and spread throughout the body.4 A young or relatively healthy body may be able to handle this interference, but the elderly and those with weak immune systems may develop serious conditions such as encephalitis or pneumonia, which can lead to death.5

When you take NSAIDs [nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil], you're suppressing key parts of your body that could have helped you heal. With Wobenzym N you're getting at causes, not merely the suppression of the pain. The differences are dramatic."
Enzymes allow you to work with your body to suppress inflammation without allowing the damage and joint destruction to proceed. Drugs, on the other hand, frequently suppress the symptoms while allowing the joint to continue to deteriorate.
"Enzymes are truly the drug of the future," Gordon says. |

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in high doses reduce the development of polyps in the intestines by reducing inflammation.
Vitamin D plays an important role in regulating and defining your immune system's response to bacteria in the intestine. Your diet can either foster the growth of friendly bacteria or feed the proliferation of unfriendly bacteria that will lead to inflammation and perhaps produce cancer-causing substances. Diet seems to influence your risk of bowel cancer more than your risk of other cancers.

The card included statistics that claimed a patient taking Vioxx was eight times less likely to die from a cardiovascular complication than patients taking standard anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. The statistics provided in the card did not include the startling results from the VIGOR trial. Instead, the company had pooled together data from other studies it had performed, a mingling of numbers that the FDA had warned was not appropriate.
To prepare its salespeople for the increasing number of questions about the drug, Merck created a training exercise called Dodge Ball Vioxx. |

They include antibiotics, anti-depressants, anti-inflammatory drugs, blood pressure medications, cholesterol-lowering drugs, estrogen, and tranquilizers. Any of these drugs can strip valuable vitamins and minerals from the body. When two or more of these drugs are combined— especially in an older patient—the risk of developing anemia rises almost exponentially. Anemia is a serious condition that can dramatically increase mortality risk for patients with chronic health problems, such as heart disease and cancer.
Many doctors and patients underestimate the risks associated with anemia. |
| This example shows once again that taking anti-inflammatory drugs versus dealing with the causes of the health condition, is not a solution at all, but leads instead to even bigger problems than those that existed before.
Consider the anti-cancer drugs that cause cancer. Tamoxifen, for example, is a common drug prescribed to high-risk women to prevent breast cancer, and it is usually taken for five years. However, research conducted in Israel found that Tamoxifen can cause cancer instead. |

Current focus is on three areas: acid production, medications (NSAIDs—nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), and bacteria (H. pylori). From Louise's history, I knew these were indeed the three primary factors contributing to the development of her stomach ulcer—acid production from the foods she ate, long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs for arthritis pain, and bacterial activity that thrives in the presence of NSAIDs.

You have to wonder about the over-hyping and exaggerated health claims of drugs like Vioxx, which were marketed as extremely safe anti-inflammatory drugs. We now know those drugs are even more dangerous than the drugs they were designed to replace: the over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. You have to wonder how a drug like PYY Nasal Spray is going to be positioned and marketed by a company like Merck. That's a legitimate question.
So this Nastech PYY Nasal Spray is something I'll be watching very carefully in the months ahead. |

I would routinely dispense a diagnosis and then send patients down the symptom-curbing path of anti-inflammatory drugs, pain medications, antidepressants, and sleep aids. Unfortunately, I saw that my own interventions often did little to stabilize or alleviate my patients' problems, so I searched for clues that would help me better understand this symptom/disease bundle.
That was when serendipity brought me into the loop: I began to experience some of the very same symptoms that plagued my patients. |

He found that the patients' joint pain and inflammation problems actually became worse once they got on these anti-inflammatory drugs. He described the situation in his own words, stating that these anti-inflammatory drugs cause the very same symptoms they were marketed to prevent.
Prescription drugs often actually cause the very same problems they are designed to suppress or eliminate, and when they're not causing the same problems, they are causing other problems that need other prescription drugs. |

| Conventional treatment of acute gouty attacks consists mainly of anti-inflammatory drugs. Preventive treatment is aimed at lowering uric-acid levels in the body, thereby reducing the tendency of this compound to crystallize in the joints or kidneys. In many cases, dietary changes can decrease uric-acid levels significantly. When diet alone does not sufficiently reduce blood levels of uric acid, doctors may prescribe drugs that either inhibit the production of uric acid or increase its excretion in the urine. Although these drugs are effective, they can sometimes cause severe side effects.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, are the most widely used drugs in the United States. They are used to treat pain, fever, and inflammation that occur as a result of acute injuries, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis. They are not curative, but do help to lessen pain and inflammation.
Unfortunately, NSAIDs are not without side effects, and some of these can be life threatening. For example, gastrointestinal bleeding due to use of NSAIDs kills almost 9,000 Americans each year. |

At the time the Cox-2s were being developed it was known that painkillers like aspirin and ibubrofen (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs) reduce inflammation and pain around arthritic joints by blocking the action of an enzyme that is abbreviated to 'Cox'. But because NSAIDs can also cause bleeding of the stomach lining, researchers reasoned that maybe by blocking the Cox enzyme, some other function to protect the stomach from excess acid was also being blocked. Maybe there were two versions of Cox. And they were right. |

Non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) kill more than 16,500 people a year by gastrointestinal bleeding. Then the COX-2 inhibitors, which were supposed to be safer than the NSAIDs, came along, and according to studies by chief drug researcher Dr. David Graham at the FDA, they've caused more than 144,000 heart attacks, more than 40 percent of which have been fatal.
So what are we talking about here? We're talking about drugs killing more Americans than the entire Vietnam War. We're talking about it happening every year -- twice a year, in fact. |
