Three amazing, heroic doctors who should be heralded as the future of safe, effective medicine in America

Pioneering doctors

(NaturalNews) All too often they are shunned by the traditional medical community, distrusted by academics steeped in conventional medical thought, and loathed by Big Pharma, but holistic and naturopathic physicians and primary care providers really ought to be hailed as healthcare heroes for having the courage and fortitude to fight for their patients against all odds.

One of them is Dr. David Brownstein, a board-certified family practice physician who, long ago, stopped practicing traditional medicine because he discovered a better, more effective way to treat his patients long-term: naturally.

In a recent column detailing the grueling seven hours he had just spent retaking his board exam, which is periodically required of its physicians by the traditional medical community, Dr. Brownstein grew irritated, not just at the length of time spent in the ordeal, but at the kind of questions he was being asked.

'No more'

Primarily, he said, most questions on the exam were related to drugs – how individual drugs are used; what side effects they have; how they interact with other drugs, etc. – and less on what actually makes the body function better so that less pharmacological intervention is needed in the first place.

He wrote:

There were virtually no questions about the importance of diet or the importance of identifying nutritional deficiencies. In fact, I can't recall one question along those lines. The patient vignettes that I suffered reading through were all the same—the patient was taking multiple drugs and I was asked one obscure question about the drug therapy prescribed to the patient. I actually felt bad for the poor patients in the vignettes as they were having their biochemistry poisoned with multi-drug prescription cocktails.

Dr. Brownstein made a decision after enduring the latest test – that he would never do so again. He noted that even though the U.S. spends nearly 20 percent of its annual GDP on healthcare, we get more disease, more mortality and less overall health benefits while Big Pharma gets richer.

"I felt sorry for my young conventional colleagues who were taking the exam. They were taught virtually nothing about what health is and how to promote and maintain it," he wrote.

Another naturopathic hero is Dr. Jack Wolfson. After speaking out about the potential dangers of vaccines, following the over-hyped measles outbreak at Disneyland last summer, Dr. Wolfson, a Cardiologist from Arizona, was viciously smeared and attacked by Big Pharma shills and trolls, as well as others in traditional medicine. He even had 38 complaints suddenly filed against him with the Arizona medical board, in a nasty attempt to discredit him.

But eventually he prevailed; all of the ridiculous charges were exposed for what they were – without merit and baseless – with the state osteopathic board ruling that he had a free-speech right to say whatever he wanted about vaccine safety. Since that time, scores of new patients have flocked to Dr. Wolfson, realizing that he's a straight-shooter and someone who obviously fights for their health safety first and foremost – like a hero.

Integrative medical hero

Another hero in alternative medicine circles is Dr. Erminia "Mimi" Guarneri, MD, who specializes in cardiology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine and holistic medicine. She began her career at Scripps Clinic as an interventional cardiologist. But soon she saw the need for a more comprehensive and holistic approach to cardiovascular disease, and as such, she founded the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, a center that combines state-of-the-art cardiac imaging technology and lifestyle change programs to prevent, diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease.

Since then, Dr. Guarneri has gone on to earn accolades for her work in integrative medicine, including being recognized by the Bravewell Collaborative and named the ARCS scientist of the year in 2009.

There are, of course, many more shining examples of exemplary holistic and naturopathic providers who should be recognized, not as kooks or crazies, but as intelligent, dedicated professionals who are pioneering changes in the way healthcare is delivered.
