AMC movie theaters go 'full Orwellian' by broadcasting message that asks moviegoers to report 'suspicious characters'

(NaturalNews) While there have been mass shootings at two movie theaters in the U.S. in recent times, such incidents remain extremely rare, but it isn't out of the realm of common sense for theater companies to take extra measures in order to keep patrons safer.

However, one theater company, AMC, has gone far beyond what many Americans might consider customary security measures. As reported by WKMG in Orlando, Fla., AMC wants patrons to report anyone they deem as "suspicious," without, of course, providing said patrons with any guidelines or directives in how to distinguish "the suspicious" from "the non-suspicious."

In full, the message states, "If you happen to see any suspiciously strange characters or bad agendas, report them to our crew."

Nothing could go wrong with this, right? Wrong.

Terrible business model

In today's radically, racially charged environment, imagine reporting a moviegoer to management whose only "crime" was showing up as a black male wearing dreadlocks, with two similar-looking friends in tow.

Or how about a white male with a Confederate battle flag emblem on his t-shirt? Wouldn't someone likely deem him "suspicious" (or maybe just offensive)?

Would anyone get nervous if a couple of young Muslim men sat down in a crowded theater, or anyone whose physical appearance resembled people from Middle East countries? Of course there will be some who would.

And so on.

Yet, already the warning is generating overreaction. As noted by WKMG, one moviegoer recently was so shaken by someone she believed was "suspicious," she was paralyzed with fear:

Lenore Mchugh said her friend was just at the movies and saw a suspicious man but couldn't do anything about it.

"She was afraid to leave because he was right on top of her, so they ran out of the theater. So in that case, what do you do?" said Mchugh.

What a brilliant business strategy – frighten your patrons so much that it's likely they'll run out of your theater in fear, never to return again. And people wonder why streaming services like Hulu, Netflix and others are doing so well.

But in our politically correct society, this is what passes for "common sense solutions," as evidenced in the opinions of other moviegoers interviewed by the Orlando station.

Scaring people for no good reason

"It's a good message to send because there has been a lot of problems with movie theater shootings and stuff," said Brittany Cavallo, apparently unaware that there have been exactly two such incidents in recent times – in particular, two incidents in three years.

"I think AMC is doing an awesome job because we should be protecting our people when they come and they should be feeling safe," said Regina Law, oblivious to the fact that if someone truly wants to do moviegoers harm, they will not wait to be "reported" and won't pay much attention to "No Firearms Allowed" rules.

"I think it's good to make people aware because some people just go in the theater, sit down and they are not aware of what's going on around them because they're just looking forward," added Mchugh, who doesn't see the irony in paying so much attention to "suspicious people" that she wouldn't have much of an opportunity to actually enjoy the movie.

Actually, truth be told, most people go into a theater and just "sit down" to watch a movie because a) that's why they went to the movies in the first place; and b) movie house shootings are far less common than Vice President Joe Biden sticking his large foot in his big mouth.

Fact is, mass shootings get a lot of press – especially from the gun-hating mainstream media – but they remain a tiny portion of annual homicides in the U.S.

The percentage of people killed while watching the latest blockbuster at a theater, meanwhile, is virtually immeasurable.
