(NaturalNews) One of the authors of The China Study, a well-known research project that evaluated the relationship between nutrition and disease, has come out in condemnation of health advice that recommends reducing or eliminating carbohydrate intake for better health. Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutrition scientist, maintains that low-carb diets are a "fraud," and that not eating grains may cause some people to develop cardiovascular disease or even cancer.
A vocal opponent of animal-based foods, the proteins of which he says can spur the growth of cancer, Dr. Campbell alleges that sticking to meat and vegetables, regardless of their type or origin, is a major health threat. We all need to be eating more grain-based foods for our health, a position he asserts is true based on his 40 years of experience in nutrition science.
According to the U.K.'s Daily Mail, Dr. Campbell feels so strongly that low-carb diets are harmful that choosing the standard American diet (SAD), in his opinion, is even a better option. SAD, in case you have never heard of the term, is a generalized dietary protocol that involves eating high quantities of processed foods, refined sugars and unhealthy fats.
"Low-carb, high-protein, high-fat diets cause high cholesterol - a major indicator of heart disease and cancer risks," believes Dr. Campbell, apparently grounded in this position without question, as quoted by Elle.com.

While his earlier findings from The China Study may have helped some people lose weight and overcome disease through improved dietary habits, Dr. Campbell's misguided position on carbohydrates demonstrates how little he actually knows about human nutrition. Far from being a detriment to human health, proteins and fats from the proper sources are absolutely essential for optimal health.
By gratuitously declaring all diets heavy in protein and fat to be dangerous, Dr. Campbell proves that he has failed to keep up with modern science. Numerous recent studies, including one out of the University of South Florida published in early 2013, reveal that the type of dietary advice being dispensed by people like Dr. Campbell is outdated and false.
"It just absolutely amazes me that medical science is just now finding this out," exclaimed Dr. Fred Hatfield, who successfully aided his body in healing itself of cancer by cutting out carbs and eating only healthy meats, vegetables and saturated fats. "The cancer was gone!" he told CBN.com. "Completely. To this day there's no trace of it. And it's been over a year."

Though seemingly unconventional, Dr. Hatfield's approach to curing his cancer is actually more aligned with science than the position held by Dr. Campbell. "It's the inflammation in the vessels that start the lesion," says Dr. Beverly Teter, a lipid biochemist at the University of Maryland, as quoted in a recent piece by CBN.com. "The body then sends the cholesterol like a scab to cover over it to protect the blood system and the vessel wall from further damage."
Sticking with a ketogenic diet, however -- ketogenic diets are comprised mostly of proteins and fats, with very little or no carbohydrates -- has been shown to help prevent this inflammation from ever forming, and can even help reverse it.
