(NaturalNews) Perhaps no one politician in recent times except President Obama himself has been as demonized as U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican. During the recent budget battle, for example, Cruz was vilified by both the political Left and Right, often hearing the harshest criticism from members of his own party.

That might lead a lesser man - or the average American - to believe that Cruz is the most hated guy in the country and that nobody anywhere offers him any support whatsoever.

Well, it is always prudent in politics to remember that every serving congressman and senator was elected by a majority of voters in his/her district... so someone approves of them. And that is certainly no different when it comes to Cruz.

Greeted with an 8-minute standing ovation

Though you didn't see much of this on cable news networks like CNN, Cruz - upon returning to his home state recently following the government shutdown and ensuing battle over raising the nation's debt limit (again) - received quite the welcome, and from none other than a demographic that conservative Republicans are not supposed to have much support from - women.

As reported, admirably, by Reuters:

Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement, returned home to a rousing welcome in Texas on Saturday after his attempt to derail Obamacare with a shutdown of the federal government led to sharp criticism of his tactics as reckless and futile.

Cruz was greeted with an eight-minute standing ovation in an appearance organized by the Texas Federation of Republican Women. People in attendance, many of them wearing red to show their support for keeping Texas a conservative-leaning state, lined up to greet him.

"After two months in Washington, it's great to be back in America," Cruz joked to the crowd of about 750 packed into a downtown San Antonio hotel ballroom.

In his speech, Cruz hammered Republican leaders for "failing to stand with House Republicans against the train wreck that is Obamacare," though he didn't mention anyone specifically by name.

But I will - John McCain, Mitch McConnell, Bob Corker, Lamar Alexander and Lindsey Graham, to name but a few.

McCain has leveled some of the worst criticism, calling Cruz and his allies - which may include some of you reading this - "wacko birds."

Nevertheless, the reception he received back home shows that his popularity among GOP activists has grown immensely - as well as with his own constituency.

'What the American people want is economic growth and job creation'

In an interview with Reuters after his speech, Cruz said there is "a lot to be encouraged about" after the bruising budget battle in Washington.

"We saw what can happen when the American people unite, when the American people stand up," he said. "What the American people want is economic growth and job creation. They are crying out for something that fixes all the enormous damage that Obamacare is causing."

Again, it was admirable for Reuters and a few other news outlets to cover Cruz's humongous and raucous welcome home, but it's shameful that it was ignored by the big broadcasters. Then again, that shouldn't surprise anyone, given the fact that those very same networks featured broadcasters and their guests who hammered - and continue to hammer - Cruz, mocking him for taking a stand, like his constituents obviously elected him to do. You just know that if someone had lobbed some tomatoes at Cruz or if a crazed opponent had made a scene at his speech, that would have been broadcast far and wide.

It's the guys like McCain, Graham, Alexander et al. who no longer elicit that kind of public emotional support, because they don't generate much excitement anymore - let alone any promise of political reform.
