(NaturalNews) Two young moms from Naperville, Illinois were dragged from their own backyards and arrested by police for refusing to accept the installation of a new 'smart meter' - a wireless utility meter - on their property.
Kim Bendis, the mother of three school-aged children and Jen Stahl, the mother of two school-aged children and a toddler, were arrested as the utility company proceeded with a forced installation of a wireless smart meter at Mrs. Stahl's home.
What is going on here? Why are Bendis and Stahl so adamantly opposed to having a smart meter installed if they are considered safe? The same reasons other informed consumers are.
Smart meters, like cell phones, cordless phones, and Wi-Fi, emit high frequency electromagnetic fields otherwise known as radio frequency (RF) radiation.
Smart meter controversy
The telecommunications industry and other vested interests have been successful in creating a climate of controversy around smart meters and the radiation they emit. Dr. Vini Khurana, a neurosurgeon at the Australian National University Medical School shares the reality:
"A wireless smart meter produces radiofrequency microwave radiation with two antennas in approximately the same frequency range (900 MHz to 2.4 GHz) as a typical cell tower. But, depending on how close it is to occupied space within a home, a smart meter can cause much higher RF exposures than cell towers commonly do."
Dr. Khurana elaborates further, "Adverse neurological effects have been reported in people who sustain close proximity to wireless meters, especially under 10 feet."
10 feet? This means in addition to the initial complications surrounding the installation of a smart meter its location is also a concern. Smart meters can just as easily be installed on a common wall (behind which everyday living is conducted), as they can be installed in a garage. And usually no one's asking.
Smart meter dangers
The California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) conducted a study on the safety of smart meters and concluded, smart meters:
• "Continue to be of concern" • Emit radiation 40 times higher than Wi-Fi
What are the risks and consequences of being exposed to these radiation levels?
The BioInitiative Report 2012 spells out clearly that chronic exposure (24/7) to low level wireless technologies is highly detrimental to our health. Autism, Fetal Exposure, Fertility, Alzheimer's Disease and other neurological and autoimmune disease effects are linked to these exposures.
Some experts claim exposure to smart meters may be more detrimental to health than exposure to cell phones, cordless phones, and Wi-Fi. What the studies do tell us is that the adverse biological effects are cumulative, so smart meter radiation adds to the other sources of electropollution in the environment. The difference being you can choose to own a cell phone or not, smart meters are being thrust on people.
Is anyone listening to Bender and Stahl and their concerns?
Maybe. California's Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) has, at the request of many of their customers across the state, begun a smart meter removal program. Customers lodged complaints about their health ranging from nausea and dizziness to heart palpitations, headaches, tinnitus, and insomnia.
California is on the right track. Can Illinois and the rest of the country follow suit?
