(NaturalNews) The Consumer Wellness Center, led by Executive Director Mike Adams (editor of NaturalNews.com), has announced its sixth grant in its Nutrition Grant Program. The Consumer Wellness Center (CWC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to promoting nutrition education. The Executive Director position is a non-paid position.
The CWC Nutrition Grant Program awards $1,000 grants to individuals or institutions dedicated to the promotion and sharing of nutritional knowledge among children, expectant mothers and other important groups.
The grants are awarded based on the number of people positively impacted and the enthusiasm and commitment of the teacher or administrator using the funds. Each award recipient is asked to report the results of the grant program to the CWC. Our intention is then to post these nutrition "success stories" on NaturalNews.com so that the most effective strategies of nutrition education can be shared with the world.
Pomelo Drive Elementary School in CaliforniaOur sixth Consumer Wellness Center Nutritional grant of $1000 has been awarded to Assistant Principal Michael Ursprung at Pomelo Drive Elementary School, a 501(c)3 non-profit located in West Hills, California.
The Consumer Wellness Center grant will enable Michael Ursprung to furnish his students with a year worth of supplies for nutrition study in the Pomelo Drive School Garden: organic soil amendments, seeds, seedlings, organic fertilizers, garden tools, handouts and journals. Most of these materials will be purchased from local school suppliers, hardware stores and nurseries.
This effort will connect and benefit the community. During multiple harvests, Pomelo Drive Elementary plans to donate eighty pounds of organic peas and ten pounds of organic carrots per week to local community food bank, West Valley Food Pantry in Woodland Hills, California. To facilitate this goal, parents of the children and local high school seniors will voluntarily join to help provide for the hungry.
Assistant Principal Ursprung has committed to reporting back to the Consumer Wellness Center. Throughout the school year, Pomelo Drive Elementary will monthly send photographs and updates of their program's progress.
"I am absolutely thrilled to see this elementary school teaching schoolchildren about gardening and nutrition," said CWC executive director Mike Adams. "These are sustainable living skills that will serve these children well throughout their entire lives. Principal Ursprung is to be commended for the time and effort he has invested in receiving this grant and putting it to a positive use."
Background on Pomelo Drive Elementary SchoolPomelo Drive Elementary School teaches 350 children from kindergarten through the third grade. With a holistic approach to education the school incorporates a 3,000 square foot organic vegetable garden into its curriculum. While the children learn about nutrition and the importance of fresh produce, the garden provides the opportunity to apply this knowledge and to learn gardening practices. Students enrich soil, plant seeds and seedlings, nurture plants and harvest vegetables. A song about the six edible parts of a plant begins each day in the garden. Students are encouraged to try new vegetables, and even the kindergarteners know roots and stems provide nourishment.
At Pomelo Drive Elementary School, nutritious plants are not just lesson topics; they are real life experiences – instilling health and wellbeing for a lifetime. According to Assistant Principal Michael Ursprung, "Our school is committed to increasing our students' nutritional knowledge by using every tool available."
