(NaturalNews) Ingredient company AHD International has introduced a new protein powder made from cranberries as an alternative to products made with dairy and soy.
"The main protein sources have so far been from dairy or soy," said AHD President John Alkire. "But manufacturers are always looking for new ways to differentiate their products, and making 'cranberry protein' claims on their products will be one way of doing this."
The Luravida-brand powder is produced from American cranberry seeds without any enzymes or extraction solvents, solely through a cold extrusion and filtration process. It contains between 23 and 30 percent protein.
While more traditional protein powders are typically 90 percent protein, the new product provides an alternative for those who have allergies to dairy or soy, or who simply prefer not to consume those ingredients. Another benefit of the new powder, according to Alkire, is that "it brings more than just protein."
"Cranberry is already well-recognized by consumers for its health benefits," he said. "The informed consumer would most probably opt for a product made with cranberry protein rather than soy or dairy protein."
In addition to protein, the new powder is high in fiber, composed of between 5 and 20 percent soluble fiber and 40 to 47 percent in soluble fiber. It contains 1 percent each of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, and 0.75 percent omega-9. AHD says the product is rich in flavonoids and amino acids, and that it contains potassium, calcium and iron.
The company foresees the powder being used in beverages such as smoothies and protein blends, as well as baked goods, bars, snacks and dietary supplements. A nanotechnology process developed by the company improves the dispersion of all its cranberry products in beverages.
The protein powder is the third Luravida cranberry product released by AHD, following an omega-3 supplement derived from cranberries and another cranberry powder high in the antioxidants known as proanthocyanidins.
