(NaturalNews) The next cancer drug might come straight from the grocery store, according to new research published in the November 2007 issue of The FASEB Journal. In their study French scientists discovered that polyphenols, a common chemical in red wine, fruits and vegetables, has the ability to affect cancerous tumors, and can battle heart disease.

The French research team found that the daily dosage of polyphenols have different effects.

Primarily, very high doses of antioxidant polyphenols, equivalent of one bottle of red wine per day, were able to shut down and prevent cancerous tumors by cutting off the formation of new blood vessels needed for tumor growth.

On the other hand, relatively low doses of polyphenols, equivalent to approximately one glass of red wine per day or simply sticking to a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables containing polyphenols, were found to play a beneficial role in combating heart disease, benefiting your circulatory system by facilitating blood vessel growth. This diet is known as the "Mediterranean Diet".

"The use of plant polyphenols as therapeutic tools presents important advantages,” said Daniel Henrion, senior author of the study, “because they have a good safety profile, a low cost and they can be obtained everywhere on the planet.”

"When it comes to finding treatments for complex diseases, the answers are sometimes right there waiting to be discovered in unexpected places like the produce aisles and wine racks of the nearest store,” said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal.

What are polyphenol antioxidants?

A polyphenol antioxidant is a type of antioxidant containing a polyphenolic substructure. In human health these compounds, numbering over 4000 distinct species, are thought to be instrumental in combating oxidative stress. The main source of polyphenol antioxidants is nutritional, since they are found in a wide array of phytonutrient-bearing foods.

Polyphenols are commonly found in:

•Red wine(grapes)
•Legumes
•Fruits such as apples, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, cranberries,
grapes, pears, plums, raspberries, and strawberries
•Vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, celery, onion and parsley
•Green tea, black tea and rooibos tea
•Dark chocolate
•Olive oil

Instead of waiting for that “mysterious pharmaceutical pill” that scientists will eventually come up with after years of research and double-blind studies; after they’ve removed some, if not most, of the nutrients in foods and replaced it with preservatives. Or, why not just eat a healthy diet containing plenty of foods high in polyphenols?

Don’t wait for a magic pill to be developed. Begin protecting yourself naturally against cancer and heart disease today by heading to your local grocery store where you can find any of the above phyto-nutrient foods. Also, according to many researchers, the principal benefit of ingestion of antioxidants seems to stem from the consumption of a wide array of phyto-nutrients, so vary your diet daily.

Remember, it is best to consume fresh fruit in season and eat vegetables raw or lightly steamed; preferably organic, or grown locally, to obtain the utmost benefit and nutrition.
