(NewsTarget) Think about your conversational habits. Do you say, "I'm afraid I'll mess that up." Or "I'm always wrong anyway." Or "I never seem to do things right" Or "I can't do that." Or "I'm too fat / too thin" ?

The first step to seeing yourself in a worthwhile way is to get rid of any negative thinking. Not just thinking, in fact, but even the things you say. The expressions you use can be devastatingly negative. You may not think you are guilty of being like that, but if you really look at a whole conversation you've just had, you will sometimes be able to see the total effect of those seemingly harmless negative thoughts. They clutter up your conversation and the total effect is what conditions the mind in a negative way.

It's surprising how fast the negative accusations can collect in your conversation and in your mind. If you say something enough times, your brain starts to accept it as true, and makes it happen more often.

How does a more positive person programme themselves for success? They give encouraging instructions to their brains repeatedly, and they automatically begin to work towards those better things. Once you are used to doing this you don't even have to think about it. The positive, encouraging image that you have of yourself just locks in automatically, and you start to see yourself differently.

Stop comparing yourself with other people unfavourably. We are all different in a million ways, and we all have our own qualities. We just have to learn to bring them to the top, it's a learning curve. Realize you are not likely to bring success into your life if you are continually programming failure in even the smallest of things. Pay attention to your thoughts. Encourage success in small areas of your life so that you are ready and able to succeed in the big areas.

Start simply by being determined to have respect for yourself in all ways. The following three points may help:

1. Speak the truth. When you live with truth in your life, it makes you feel so much better. Speak from your heart. It's not what you say, but how you say it that matters, and be determined to build self esteem by being truthful from now onwards.

2. Ask for what you want. Take responsibility for what you want and for receiving it. Be prepared for it and everything that comes along with it.

3. Keep your word. Watch how people start having more respect for you because they realise that you can be relied on and trusted.

Give the "new you" time to take shape, get to like yourself and then watch as your life shifts toward success. Remember, if you aren't determined to be successful, you won't be successful.

Who's in charge? You are! Who can make changes so that you see yourself differently? You can!

About the author

I live in Spain now, but I trained as a counsellor in the UK. My training as a counsellor was the Carl Rogers' system of person centred counselling... not giving advice, but helping people to take control of their lives by realising that they should take the responsibility for where they are in life. Before I left the UK I was working with Careline, the National telephone counselling organisation....I learnt a lot from the challenges presented there!!!
My husband and I left the UK in December 1999 and moved to Spain to live. From that time onwards I was able to concentrate on the things I enjoy most....my work as a counsellor, hosting self improvement groups, starting two non smoking social clubs, and writing articles for several monthly magazines here for the English speaking community. I have also been on local Sol TV twice and Madrid and Local Radio.
My first book was published in 2006.... I have had such lovely feedback from many readers.....so I just want to pass on the things that I have learned over the years that have really helped to improve my life and my way of looking at things.
Positive thinking plays a big part in taking control of your life and I have personally learnt a great deal from that. I have applied it in my own life, and have also seen how others have become stronger and happier through it, so I am convinced that most people who want to make changes can benefit and achieve great improvements.
