(NaturalNews) These days it seems that everybody wants to chime in on health care reform. Presidential candidates are unveiling ideas on health care like a group of Apple executives unveiling the next iPod. Two advocacy groups from California are joining the chorus of voices that want change.

The latest proposal comes from a joint effort between the California Restaurant Association (CRA) and the California Small Business Association (CSBA).

The plan would force a new 1 cent sales tax in order to offset ever-increasing health care costs in California.

CRA and CSBA argue that the new sales tax will provide a stable source of revenue which will ensure that small businesses, their employees and dependents have access to affordable, quality health care. The groups also favor price controls to force health insurance companies to charge prices below a certain amount.

“We are committed to working with CRA and other stakeholders to ensure that Californians have access to affordable health care,” said Betty Jo Toccoli, who is the president of the California Small Business Association. “We believe that a 1 cent sales tax is the most equitable way to pay for health care reform as every Californian will be contributing to the system as well as benefiting from the system.”

Opponents of this plan and others like it argue that new taxes and regulations are what has caused the health care crisis in the first place. They argue that adding a new layer of bureaucracy will neither solve the problem nor increase effectiveness, but do the opposite in the long run.
