(NaturalNews) Multinational flavors and fragrances manufacturer Frutarom is investigating the heartburn-prevention effects of fenugreek extract, after preliminary evidence suggests that it may provide a safe and effective treatment for the common problem.
In October 2006, Frutarom acquired Acatris Health, which sells Fenulife-brand fenugreek extract. It markets the extract as a beneficial dietary supplement, without the distinctive bodily odors that can come from consuming fenugreek directly.
Fenugreek is an herb often used in pickling and curry sauces. It is renowned for treating sinus and lung congestion, fighting infection, and for anti-inflammatory properties. The herb is also used by lactating women to increase inadequate breast-milk production, and is said to increase breast size.
According to Frutarom's marketing manager, Liesbeth Neven, the company began investigating fenugreek extract's effects on heartburn after receiving anecdotal reports of its efficacy. The company also came across a study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology suggesting that the extract provided anti-ulcer benefits to rats.
The company hopes to begin human studies in the next six months, with results available by the end of the year.
"It gives people the possibility to immediately judge if it helps," Neven said, contrasting fenugreek extract with other supplements, which must be taken for an extended time before showing any benefits.
Another benefit of fenugreek extract is that it has no known side effects of interactions with other medications. By contrast, heartburn treatments such as antacids, H2 blockers and proton pumps are known to cause side effects including diarrhea, headaches and dizziness.
Heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest, is caused by acid reflux, or stomach acid being released into the esophagus. It is a fairly common condition, with 50 percent of cases suffered by people between the ages of 45 and 64. It can be caused by one-time indigestion or by more chronic conditions.
