Laughter is contagious and not in a bad way. New studies are reinforcing beliefs that humor is a highly effective way to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, protect the heart and other helpful physical effects.

The increased health benefits from laughter are becoming more apparent as the workers are becoming increasingly stressed in the workplace.

Comedian Judy Carter suggests using humor in what would normally be a stressful work situation. By laughing and having fun at work, employees will enjoy their jobs more, stay at them longer, and do better work.

“Research shows that the use of comedy in the workplace is very beneficial for an employees health, happiness and even productivity,” Carter said. “When an employee is happy, the company is likely to benefit from increased productivity, lower insurance premiums and less paid sick days.”

Humor is also a vital component of the creative process. By encouraging employees to laugh and joke around, companies will actually see in increase in the amount of creativity from it’s employees.

“The majority of people simply don’t have the time to even consider developing an ‘artsy self,’ with all their looming deadlines, bursting in-boxes, and unanswered emails to deal with,” Carter said. “The use of humor is a great way to stimulate creativity, and may be just the thing a company needed to think outside the box.”
