But while hospitals and public health services gear up for what they describe as an inevitable catastrophe, a small but growing number of diabetes patients are learning how to lose weight, balance their blood sugar, reduce their bodies’ need for insulin, and heal complications such as leg ulcers and insufficient circulation in the toes and feet.
