- In a bid to make computing safe and secure, Google Inc. has decided to distribute a free software startup kit.
- Google introduced the software kit in Las Vegas on Friday.
- The set of programs will facilitate installing and maintaining basic applications.
- According to an Associated Press report, Google is all set to prove that it still has got the upper hand when it comes to making computers more user-friendly.
- With this software kit, the leading Internet search engine is all set to give Microsoft a run for its money.
- Google provides six programs in the package.
- The Google Pack comprises of Adobe Systems Inc.'s Acrobat Reader, RealNetworks Inc.'s media player, Mozilla's Firefox Web browser and Cerulean Studios' Trillian instant messaging program.
- It doesn't have word processing and spreadsheet programs, however, Google has promised to negotiate with Sun Microsystems Inc. to support an open-source version of those applications.
- The software kit lacks the free OpenOffice suite, which includes word-processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Other applications in the pack are available for free on the web.
- Soon after the announcement, Google's shares have gone up $14.42 on Friday to close at $465.66 on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
- The stock price earlier touched a new high of $470.50 earlier in the session.
