In light of CODEX’s potential impact on the dietary supplements industry, Nordic Naturals announced today that the company will maintain its current positioning around not adding synthetic vitamins to its cod liver oils. Nordic Naturals additionally wants to assure its customer base that it will continue producing the highest quality Arctic Cod Liver Oil with only naturally occurring levels of Vitamin A.

“There has been talk lately that CODEX may have an impact on cod liver oil by requiring standardization of Vitamin A to ensure that each lot is exactly the same,” says Joar Opheim, CEO of Nordic Naturals. “Since available Vitamin A sources are synthetic, the concern is well founded but has not been documented to date. Nordic Naturals remains committed to not supplementing its oils with synthetic Vitamin A.” Since Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil is manufactured in Arctic Norway and Norway is not a member of EU, a CODEX decision will technically have no impact on the Norwegian supplement industry.

Nordic Naturals, a supplier of Omega-3 fatty acids to natural products retailers, offers Arctic Cod Liver Oil made exclusively from Arctic Cod. The company does in no way use secondary by-product from the animal feed industry or fish such as seit or haddock. In addition, no fish body oils or synthetic additives are included.

Adds Joar, “We use 100% Arctic Cod because it has the highest DHA content of any cod species. In addition, when fish species other than arctic cod are used for CLO, synthetic Vitamin A and Vitamin D need to be added back to standardize the oil as Cod Liver Oil. We have never engaged in this practice.”

Available in liquid or in flavored gel caps, Nordic Naturals Arctic Cod Liver Oil was awarded “best-tasting” by the American Culinary Institute three years in a row. Cod Liver Oil products include lemon flavor, orange flavor, strawberry flavor, peach flavor, unflavored, lemon flavored soft gels, single serving teaspoon packets (orange flavor) and Pet Cod Liver Oil. Nordic Naturals cod liver is tested to ensure healthy levels of 100% naturally occurring Vitamins A and D.

Founded by husband-and-wife team Joar and Michele Opheim, Nordic Naturals is the leader in Omega-3 fish oils and EFA blends with exceptional taste, freshness and purity levels. The company offers over 50 different fish oil products and EFA blends, including liquids, capsules, and children's chewables. Adams was the first food science researcher to document high levels of tungsten in superfoods. He also discovered over 11 ppm lead in imported mangosteen powder, and led an industry-wide voluntary agreement to limit heavy metals in rice protein products.

In addition to his lab work, Adams is also the (non-paid) executive director of the non-profit Consumer Wellness Center (CWC), an organization that redirects 100% of its donations receipts to grant programs that teach children and women how to grow their own food or vastly improve their nutrition.
