In December of 2003, Gwen Watkins was hospitialized because her systemic lupus erythematosus had worsened. Lupus is a chronic inflammation condition caused by an autoimmune disease. Her condition was affecting all functions of her body including her skin, her nervous system, joints, kidneys and heart. Gwen could no longer function like the everyday person. She recalls her experience saying, “I had welts and sores on my head, my feet were swollen five times their normal size, I had constant pneumonia, I was losing my voice, I had arthritis and my heart could no longer function like before. The
doctors told me I had too much going on and I was going to die.”
Gwen experienced all the symptoms and downfalls lupus brings. Unable to bathe or cook for herself, she called Dr. Bob Martin who hosts a health radio show.
