With many of the cox inhibitor pharmaceuticals being the subject of recalls and class-action lawsuits because of concerns that they could cause heart attacks, increasing numbers of pain sufferers are turning to magnet therapy as a drug-free means of pain relief.

"Skepticism about pain-relief magnets is still widespread," notes Alvin A. Bakst, MD, founder of Magnatech Labs, "and there certainly are many such products on the market that don't work. The inferior products are inexpensive, use magnets that are bipolar instead of unipolar, and are too weak to penetrate into the body to reach the affected nerve carrying the pain impulse. If the depth of penetration into the body is too weak to affect that nerve, it simply cannot work. But when magnets are designed properly and used correctly, they are a wonderful alternative treatment for pain."

Bakst speaks from personal experience with pain. A thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon for more than 45 years, he set out to find relief for his own debilitating back discomfort. In Korea, Taiwan and Japan, he learned about the benefits of magnetic therapy.

Bakst tested many such products for years in the laboratory using an oscilloscope to evaluate the effects of magnetic strength on the nerve conduction of pain. He then developed multiple devices of his own under his Dr. Bakst Magnetics product line. Very high in gauss strength, these unipolar magnets are more powerful than any other pain relief magnet products. Dr. Bakst holds the only patent in the business (U. "Magnet therapy is not magic; there's plenty of scientific reasoning to explain why magnets can help to relieve pain and make us feel better," Dr. Bakst notes. "The atoms and molecules that make up human cells have a magnetic field. They have positive and negative poles. The earth, too, has a natural magnetic field, a north and south pole, and our bodies have acclimated to the earth's field. Unfortunately, electrical and electronic devices such as microwaves and cellular phones have become so commonplace that they compete with natural magnetic fields and disrupt the balance."

Some researchers report that a side benefit of therapeutic magnets is that they help the body heal itself by increasing blood flow, which sends more warmth, oxygen and nutrients to the affected area. This can reduce inflammation and swelling.

"Lab research at New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center has demonstrated that when you tear tissue, magnets can promote the healing of the tissue by increasing the level of phosphorylization," Dr. Bakst points out. "It has also been shown that at a bone fracture site, placement of powerful magnets causes increased levels of alkaline phosphatase, which increases osteoblastic activity. This aids in the healing of bone, and the FDA has actually approved an electromagnetic product to help in the healing of difficult fractures. It has also been used in the treatment of burns and bruises, especially post operative bruising."

When Russian cosmonauts experienced space sickness after spending long periods of time aboard the Mir space station, scientists theorized that they had spent too much time away from the earth's magnetic forces. In the U.S. it was called chronic fatigue syndrome. The Japanese called it a "magnetic deficiency syndrome." After a magnetic generator was installed in the space station, the cosmonauts' mood and health improved dramatically.

Users of Dr. Bakst's products report that pain is often reduced or eliminated soon after the device is placed in the affected area. Products include back belts, shoulder harnesses, knee and wrist devices, ankle braces, shoe insoles, golf gloves, bracelets and many other devices. Instructions for placement are based on Dr. Bakst's extensive anatomic study of the body's nerve pathways.

"The very high gauss strength of our magnets penetrates up to four inches deep through skin, muscle and bone to get to the nerve which carries the pain impulse. There is no feeling or sensation in a magnetic field -- no tingling or buzzing," Bakst explains. "Pain sensation is communicated to the brain through a flow of tiny ions, carrying both positive and negative charges, which interact with each other. Our products put out very powerful negative charges, which interrupt the flow of those ions, causing the pain message to diminish or disappear. There is no such thing as pain if the impulse does not reach the brain."

When properly used, magnets have been shown to be beneficial in pain relief when studied by researchers at Baylor University College of Medicine, the University of Kentucky, Tufts University, New York Medical College, the University of Miami, Mount Sinai Medical Center, the National Institutes of Health and many other respected institutions.
