Georgia now accepting credit cards for tax payments

The state revenue commissioner says that the service is provided to increase safety and security of tax transactions.   • Beginning Tuesday, Georgia taxpayers will be able to pay the balance due on their 2004 state personal income tax return with a credit card.
  • The Georgia Department of Revenue will allow payments with Visa, American Express, MasterCard and Discover cards.
  • Revenue Commission Bart Graham says the new service provides what he calls a "safe and secure option" for Georgians to pay their taxes.
  • Official Payments Corporation will collect a 2.5 percent convenience fee based on the size of the payment to cover the cost of processing the transaction.
  • The Georgia Revenue Department does not receive any of the convenience fee.
  • Credit cards are only accepted as payment for current year individual income tax due on Forms 500 and 500-E-Z.
  • Credit cards can be used to make estimated tax payments for tax-year 2005.
  • At this time, credit cards payments are NOT accepted for payments associated with extensions, installment payment agreements, amended returns, or assessment notices.
  • As of this past Tuesday, the Department of Revenue had processed $1.6 million individual income tax returns for tax year 2004.
  • About 73 percent of those returns were filed electronically.
