Details

  • The agreement extends the pact, originally struck in November 2002, under which Microsoft (MSFT: news, chart, profile) uses software from the Cupertino, Calif., security software provider (SYMC: news, chart, profile) to help combat unwanted junk e-mail messages sent to users of the Internet-based e-mail service.
  • Symantec, which makes the popular Norton brand of antivirus and security software, saw its stock climb 26 cents, or over 1 percent, to close at $21.74 following the news.
  • Microsoft's shares eased 3 cents to end at $25.20.
  • The companies did not disclose financial terms of the agreement.
  • The software aims to detect and filter out the unwanted messages before they can be delivered to the individual mailboxes of Hotmail users.
  • "Our customers' protection and safety remains a top priority for MSN and we continue to invest in a range of technologies and solutions to help protect them from issues including spam," Kevin Doerr, an executive with Microsoft's Hotmail unit, said.
