A new report by UNICEF and The Micronutrient Initiative says that
millions of people around the world are lacking key vitamins and
minerals like iodine, folic acid, and zinc. The report is accompanied by
pictures of people in third world countries. But here's the real story
on this news: the vast majority of Americans are suffering from
nutritional deficiencies right now as well! It's true: nearly 2/3rds
of Americans are deficient in zinc. Well over half are deficient in
magnesium. There are widespread deficiencies in the B vitamins, folic
acid, Vitamin D and other essential nutrients. But how could this happen
in a "rich" nation like America? The answer is simple: our foods are
devoid of real nutrition. They're processed, refined and packaged for
the sole purpose of generating profits for food and beverage
manufacturers. There is absolutely no attention given to nutrition by
most food manufacturers. All they do is comply with federal law by
fortifying white flour, for example. But they're not at all interested
in the idea of keeping people healthy. That would raise the price of
their products! UNICEF is also right: there are glaring nutritional
deficiencies throughout the world, and most of these would cost mere
pennies to correct. But before these problems can even be addressed,
there needs to be far more education and publicity to help make people
aware of the fact that the global food supply is the #1 cause of death
and disease on planet Earth.
