What's interesting about this article is the revelation that private
industry groups are meeting with the EPA in what they call an education
effort. But an observation of the meetings between industry groups and
government oversight organizations, tells us that most of these type of
meetings end up becoming a thinly veiled lobbying effort. Industry
calls this an education task force, which is, of course, exactly what
the drug companies call advertising to consumers. It's not propaganda,
they say, it's education. In this particular case, I believe the EPA
is just doing its job in trying to listen to the concerns of industry
and is not have some hidden agenda to conspire with industry to you
weekend, environmental protection laws. However, the intention of
industry in this case is very likely to influence the EPA to weaken
those laws. Accordingly, I believe the lawsuit by the Seattle group is
directed at the wrong target and will almost certainly be struck down in
the courts.
